Cheat Sheet - Boko Haram Steps Up Its War on Kids

IT GETS WORSE
Boko Haram said in a video Monday they will consider exchanging the kidnapped Nigerian girls for their men in prison. Despite this new hope for rescuing the girls, Boko Haram's campaign of violence against schoolchildren is unlikley to abate. The #BringBackOurGirls campaign has revealed Boko Haram's vicious efforts to kidnap schoolgirls, but their assaults against boys have ended in slaughter.
LOST TIME
Secretary of State John Kerry admitted in a private meeting with Syrian opposition leaders last week that the international community "wasted a year" in the fight against Bashar al-Assad, reports Josh Rogin. The Syrian Opposition Coalition is calling on the U.S. to help turn back Assad's recent victories, but it is unclear if Kerry's sympathy will turn into decisive action.
NOT SO LEGIT
Sunday's referendum for sovereignty in eastern Ukraine was rife with all the corruption, intimidation, and chaos of Putin's Russia. Jamie Dettmer reports from the polling stations of Donetsk, interviewing young and old voters who expressed a longing for the stability of life in Mother Russia. But as Ukrainian national guardsmen opened fire and pro-separatist thugs ran the streets, it's clear that the referendum will do anything but bring peace to the region.
UNDERSTATEMENT

Donald Sterling tried to reclaim his severely sullied reputation Sunday night in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper, but it arguably could have gone better. In an interview taped Sunday and set to air Monday, Sterling said, "I made a terrible mistake. I'm here to apologize." Yet, in his first public comments since being banned for life by the NBA, Sterling also managed to criticize beloved basketball player Magic Johnson. "Has he done everything he can do to help minorities? I don't think so," says Sterling. "I'll say it: He's great. But I don't think he's a good example for the children of Los Angeles." Sterling's estranged wife, Shelly, has also been making the TV rounds, protesting the NBA's efforts to get her to sell her share of the Clippers. "I don't know why I should be punished for what his actions were," she said.

TRANSAMERICA

On Sunday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said he believed the military should review its ban on transgender Americans serving in the armed forces. "Every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity if they fit the qualifications and can do it," he said on ABC's This Week. He did not say the ban should be overturned, but rather "continually should be reviewed." Although gay men and lesbians have been allowed to openly serve in the military since 2010, Hagel said it is different with transgender people. "These issues require medical attention," he said, that make it more complicated to allow them to serve.
