Cheat Sheet - Were Christians Right About Gay Marriage All Along?

Read This, Skip That ....

May 27, 2014
JUDGMENT
The marriage equality fight is all but won. Jay Michaelson wonders if same-sex couples will really change the institution, shifting conceptions around monogamy and intimacy, or if the domesticating powers of marriage could erase the more libertine tendencies of gay culture. Will the future of marriage be boring as hell, or a Bible-thumper's idea of Sodom and Gomorrah?
THE 1%

The median salary for American CEOs increased for the fourth year in a row, crossing the eight-figure threshold for the first time. According to an Associated Press/Equilar pay study, a typical CEO made $10.5 million in 2013. The female CEOs surveyed actually made more than their male counterparts, $11.7 million to $10.5 million. However, only 12 of the CEOs included were women, while there were 325 men. Overall, median CEO salaries were up 8 percent from the year before and up more than 50 percent since 2009. The increase reflects the growing wage gap between management and workers over recent years. A CEO now makes 257 times more than an average employee, compared to 181 times more in 2009, the researchers say.

ERASED HISTORY
The Jobar Synagogue was one of the holiest Jewish sites in Syria and contained priceless historical artifacts. Now it's rubble and the opposition says Bashar al-Assad is to blame, reports Josh Rogin. The synagogue is just the latest victim of a war that has ruined irreplaceable cultural and religious sites across the country.
BEST FOUR YEARS

It pays to go to college. Literally. A new analysis by the Economic Policy Institute in Washington found that the wage difference between college graduates and non-degree holders is at a record. People with college degrees make 98 percent more an hour than people without, up from 89 percent just five years ago. In fact, MIT economist David Autor found that not getting a college degree costs someone about half a million dollars. College debt may still be a real fear and hardship, but it's a relatively small cost in the long term. The average $25,000 in student debt doesn't hold a candle to the $500,000 to be made over a lifetime.

STRUCK DOWN

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 decision that Florida's law restricting death-row prisoners from trying to prove they are mentally impaired is unconstitutional. Florida's law mandates that prisoners must have an IQ of less than 70 "before being permitted to present any additional evidence of intellectual disability." Justice Anthony Kennedy delivered the opinion, arguing Florida's law violates the Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment. "This rigid rule creates an unacceptable risk that persons with intellectual disability will be executed, and thus is unconstitutional," he wrote.
