The Real Military Moves Into Ferguson After a night of Molotov cocktails and tear gas in Ferguson, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon was forced to call in the National Guard. Justin Glawe reports that the revelation that Michael Brown was shot six times has only made things worse. Many black residents felt like their hometown was governed by martial law, but now the real thing is coming. Read it at The Daily Beast PRIVATE AUTOPSY 2. Michael Brown Was Shot at Least Six Times The unarmed black teenager killed by a police officer August 9 in Ferguson, Missouri, was shot at least six times, according to a preliminary private autopsy. The New York Times reports that Dr. Michael Baden, former New York City chief medical examiner, flew in at the request of Brown's family to conduct a private autopsy, separate from the local one and another ordered by Attorney General Eric Holder. Two of the bullets hit Brown's head, and four hit his right arm, Baden said. None were likely shot at close range—no gunpowder residue was found on Brown's body. Brown would not have survived the shooting even if he had been taken to a hospital right away, Baden said. Read it at The New York Times MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3. U.S. Intelligence Can't Stop the Next Snowden for Years It will take years to sufficiently overhaul current U.S. intelligence protocols to prevent the next Edward Snowden. Kimberly Dozier reports that U.S. intelligence officials are months, if not years, away from being able to monitor public databases for illegal employee activity and even farther from monitoring individual computers. Kurds Recapture Part of Mosul Dam Kurdish officials say forces have managed to recapture the eastern part of the Mosul dam from ISIS. The joint operation involved Kurdish troops on the ground combined with U.S. airstrikes. On August 7 ISIS seized the strategic dam which provides water and electricity to northern Iraq. ISIS' control created fears that the militant group would try to flood the region. The U.S. said its latest airstrikes destroyed 19 ISIS vehicles. According to Hoshyar Zebari, a senior Kurdish official, the Peshmerga are "encountering fierce resistance, bombs on the roadside, suicide bombers and so on." Still, they "are pushing and taking the fight to them to clear the dam." Read it at BBC STICKY FINGERS 5. Paris Gunmen Rob Saudi Prince of $334K Robbers armed with Kalashnikovs robbed the motorcade of a Saudi Arabian prince in Paris late on Sunday. The bandits made off with 250,000 euros ($334,000) in cash, as well as "sensitive" documents, according to French police, as the convoy traveled from the Saudi embassy to Le Bourget airport. The last car in the motorcade, a Mercedes minivan, was hijacked by eight hooded thieves traveling in two BMWs, said Rocco Contento, a representative of the local police. The driver was later released and the minivan was found burned. Contento said the attack was "very well organized" and that the robbers must have "been informed about the schedule" because there was no need to fire a shot, and nobody was injured.
