U.S. Almost Bombed Its Own Syrian Allies When the U.S.-led coalition began airstrikes in Syria last week, it almost hit a facility connected with the Free Syrian Army, one of the moderate rebel groups the White House claims as an ally. Josh Rogin reports the Pentagon is not coordinating airstrikes with anti-ISIS rebels on the ground. As a result, the U.S. is alienating a potential ally and racking up civilian casualties. Occupy Hong Kong Hangs On Protests in Hong Kong continued last night, despite Chief Executive Leung Chun-Ying's call to "stop this campaign immediately." The mass uprisings have attracted a diverse, informal crowd of students, trade unionists, social workers, and even some business executives, reports Lennox Samuels. White House Jumper Made It to East Room According to a report by The Washington Post, White House fence jumper Omar Gonzalez made it further into the White House than the Secret Service let on. Gonzalez reportedly not only made it through the front doors, he then knocked down a Secret Service officer, and while carrying a knife, sprinted right by stairs leading up to the family's living quarters, and down the hall to the East Room. The East Room is a large state room used for formal events. He was then tackled just as he reached the doorway to the Green Room. Apparently an officer inside the front door was delayed in finding out that an intruder was about to break through, and therefore did not immediately lock the front door. The Girls Who Were Taken Before Hannah The case of missing University of Virginia student Hannah Graham has revealed a possibly gruesome past of Jesse Matthew, the man charged with abducting Graham. On Monday, police announced Matthew was linked to the 2009 kidnapping and murder of Virginia Tech student Morgan Harrington. Now, Michael Daly reports, police say DNA collected in that investigation connects him to the 2005 rape and choking of another Virginia woman. Read it at The Daily Beast FALL OR SUMMER? 5. Climate Change Causing Heat Waves A study of 22 peer-reviewed analyses on 2013's extreme weather and climate events argues that manmade global warming has caused a tenfold increase in the risk for long-lasting and severe heat waves. The analyses looked at 16 severe events in 2013, including the California drought and the Australian heat wave. A total of nine of the 16 events were tied to manmade climate change.
