Cheat Sheet - How ‘Titanic’ Helped Her Escape North Korea

Read This, Skip That ....

October 31, 2014
DAREDEVIL
Watching a Western movie is punishable by death in totalitarian North Korea. For 21-year-old Yeonmi Park, it was worth the risk: seeing Titanic empowered her to risk it all to escape from the Hermit Kingdom. Lizzie Crocker reports on her harrowing escape, which included the imprisonment of family members and unspeakable brutality by Chinese authorities.
EBOLANOIA

A judge in Maine rejected the state's request to keep a nurse under quarantine because she's not showing symptoms of Ebola and therefore not infectious. Kaci Hickox returned from treating Ebola patients in West Africa this month and was quarantined in New Jersey and then Maine despite testing negative for the virus. While the judge said no to quarantine, he ordered her to follow CDC guidelines including monitoring, coordinating her travel with public health officials, not going to public places, not leaving the town of Fort Kent, and staying three feet away from other people while engaging in outdoor activities.

LOST IT

That didn't take long. After being released from a psychiatric facility late Thursday, Amanda Bynes took off on an epic Twitter rant about her family and manager Sam Lutfi, declaring, "I am going to court today with my lawyer to prove that I am more than capable of handling my personal life and finances and I am enraged." Bynes continued, claiming, "I got released from the hospital that Sam Lutfi and my parents arranged to send me to because my dad is humiliated by what he's done… The police filed a report against my dad—I am not able to be in the same room with him. He is a sexual predator and he SHOULD BE IN JAIL." Bynes also said she was never homeless and was planning to transfer to NYU.

STAGE FRIGHT
The Democrats may manage to skate through another midterm and keep the Senate, but the win wouldn't solve long-term problems. We may keep electing Democratic presidents, writes Michael Tomasky, but he or she won't be able to do much of anything about any of these matters until the Democratic Party finds a way turn out voters and control Congress.
GHOST STORIES
Charles Manson's murderous, ragtag gang terrified America, but Gay Talese painted a picture of the cult leader far creepier than any police report of his crimes. In 1970, Talese wrote about the Manson gang's visit to a blind rancher in Montana.
