Cheat Sheet - Kim Jong Un: Dead or Alive?

Read This, Skip That ....

October 10, 2014
WHO'S THE BOSS?

Kim Jong Un was a no-show at the anniversary for North Korea's ruling party today, the most conspicuous absence of his mysterious disappearance to date. Even if Kim appears again, everyone will wonder whether he's in charge or just a figurehead, Gordon G. Chang writes. Has the old guard sidelined the young dictator?

PERFECT CHOICE

Malala Yousafzai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for risking her life to secure girls' education. The 17-year-old activist is the youngest Nobel winner in history and will share the award with Indian children's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi. True to her commitment to education, Malala was in school when she was named the winner and will remain there until class is dismissed.

AIMLESS

Without U.S. soldiers in Syria directing Air Force bombs, pilots say they don't have any valuable targets to hit. Dave Majumdar speaks to frustrated airmen who say it's pointless to bomb the wrong target and antagonize the local population.

SORRY, RICK

The Supreme Court blocked Wisconsin from implementing its new voter ID law on Thursday, the same night that a federal judge in Texas struck down that state's law requiring voters to produce government-issued identification before voting. U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzalez Ramos, an Obama appointee, ruled that Texas's law amounted to an "unconstitutional poll tax" intended to discriminate against Hispanic and African-American citizens. She said that although she found no "smoking guns" of racist intentions in the 2011 session in which the law was passed, the law's sponsors "were motivated, at the very least in part, because of and not merely in spite of the voter ID law's detrimental effects on the African-American and Hispanic electorate." A spokesman for Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said that the state will "immediately appeal" the ruling. The Supreme Court gave no reason for its ruling, but Justices Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas dissented, arguing that they cannot block an appeals court unless it "clearly and demonstrably erred in its application of accepted standards."

ROAR

Katy Perry has nabbed the coveted halftime show at the 2015 Super Bowl. Multiple sources confirmed the "Fireworks" singer would take the stage February 1 in Glendale, Arizona. Perry was considered a frontrunner in an August Wall Street Journal report, which listed Coldplay and Rihanna as her competition. Rihanna's recent fracas with CBS over their decision to axe her "Run This Town" during the Ray Rice scandal may have ended her shot. The NFL is also reported to have started asking performers to pay to play the Super Bowl, which could be a turn-off. Last week, Perry appeared on ESPN's College Game Day, claiming "I'm not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl." The 11.5 million viewers for Bruno Mars's halftime show in 2014 may have changed her mind.
