Read This, Skip That ....

GRINCHES
The Supreme Court just put a lump of coal in the Christmas stockings of low-wage workers, writes Sally Kohn. The Supreme Court ruled that Amazon doesn't have to compensate workers for the time it takes to wait to get through security. The Court and Amazon don't believe workers' time is worth anything.
DARK ARTS
John Brennan, the Director of Central Intelligence, said Thursday in a rare press conference it is "unknowable" if torture of terrorist suspects produced valuable intelligence after 9/11. The Senate's torture report found it never did. Brennan said the CIA was "not prepared" to interrogate suspects, but it used Justice Department-approved methods he called "enhanced interrogation techniques." "There were no easy answers but no matter what your views on EITs, our agency did a lot of things right to keep this nation safe and secure," Brennan said after saying President Obama banned torture as contrary to American values. Brennan denied misleading Congress or the public about the ineffectiveness and brutality of the interrogations. Not once did Brennan say "torture." Some interrogations went out of bounds, he said, and they were abhorrent.
OFF CAMPUS
Despite the focus on sexual assault on campus, a government study suggests college-age women are more likely to be attacked if they are not students. Brandy Zadrozny on what this study tells us about the pervasiveness of rape both on and off campuses.
AWKWARD

China is using Ferguson, Eric Garner, and CIA torture to tell the U.S. to quit acting holier than thou. Secretary of State John Kerry and U.S. Ambassador to China Max Baucus issued statements on International Human Rights Day mentioning China's imprisoned Nobel laureate, Liu Xiaobo. On Thursday, the Chinese foreign ministry hit back, saying the U.S. has no right to lecture on human rights abroad with its own record at home. "The United States is not looking at the facts and intentionally smearing China's rights situation, exposing even more the U.S. hypocrisy and double standards on the issue of human rights," the foreign ministry's spokesman said. In addition, China awarded Fidel Castro its Confucius Peace Prize, which was established in 2010 in response to the Nobel being awarded to Xiaobo.

WTF
The Golden Globes TV nominations reliably elicit a WTF reaction. This year's shockers: no Amy Poehler, nothing for Mad Men, and a whole lot of love for virgins and transgender people. Kevin Fallon parses through the most egregious snubs and delightful surprises.
