TURNING TABLES

Cop-watching to reduce brutality and civil-rights violations was started by the Black Panther Party in the 1960s. Now, reports Brandy Zadrozny, armed open-carry activists in Texas are the ones carrying on the tradition, this time to protect gun rights.

TOWERING

Mario Cuomo, three-term governor of New York and a star of Democratic politics during the Reagan era, died Thursday at age 82. Cuomo died of natural causes six hours after his son, Andrew, was sworn in for a second term as governor of New York. Cuomo was first elected governor in 1983 and immediately rose to national prominence by fighting Ronald Reagan and the conservative revolution, Eleanor Clift writes. In 1984, Cuomo addressed the Democratic National Convention and said Reagan was blind to much of the nation's suffering. In 1992, Cuomo left his plane idling on the runway as he decided against running for president. Before losing a fourth bid for governor, Cuomo guided the state through two recessions and vastly expanded its penal system.

THE FINAL MATCH-UP

Ohio State University will face Oregon in the first-ever College Football Championship, after unseating top-ranked Alabama in the semifinal at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on Thursday. The No. 4 Buckeyes clinched a 42-35 win off running back Ezekiel Elliott's 85-yard touchdown with less than four minutes left in the game. The No. 2-ranked Oregon Ducks' high-powered offense blew past the reigning champion Florida State at the Rose Bowl earlier on Thursday, with 35 unanswered points in the second half. The Buckeyes and the Ducks will meet in Arlington, Texas, at the home of the Dallas Cowboys for the first-of-its-kind College Football Championship Game on Jan. 12.

WHODUNNIT

Flu season is in full swing, and so is the debate between scientists and anti-vaxxers. Kent Sepkowitz says the real price society pays as a result of anti-vaxxer ignorance is that scientists won't take the flaws in the flu vaccine process head on for fear of giving the mob ammunition.
