POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS 101

PowerPoint presentations. For better or worse, they have become simply the way things are done, both in companies and in academia, and even beyond, in churches and other settings. So, getting better at delivering PowerPoint presentations, and seeing what not to do, are good career moves.

So, we will talk first here about what NOT to do (more fun). To do so, I will direct you to two sites. First, here is a short article by marketing expert Seth Godin talking about poor Powerpoint presentations, and on how to improve them - read it by clicking http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2007/01/really_bad_powe.html (yes, that's really him below):

Next, here is a funny video to watch on the subject. See:

(Yes, that is the title, and yes, it is from the MadTV show).

And to close on a positive point, here is a good video on what TO DO in delivering more effective PowerPoint presentations:

So, what can you do to improve PowerPoint presentations you deliver? What’s your best, or worst, PowerPoint story to share with us (about a presentation you gave or one that you saw)? If you have any ideas on this subject, email me a dwyld.kwu@gmail.com and I will post a follow-up. Looking forward to the discussion.

NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION 101

As you well know, so much of our communication, both intended and unintended, comes from nonverbal ques. So, to better understand non-verbal communication, please view these two videos:

The first is from Management Consultancy International:

The second features communications expert Jan Hargrave:

After watching these two videos, what do you think about these concepts, and how do they relate to your own experiences? To you, what is the most important aspect of non-verbal communication? Do you have something you personally want to work on to improve your communication abilities (and your ability to interpret others)?

If you have any ideas on this subject, email me a dwyld.kwu@gmail.com and I will post a follow-up. Look forward to the discussion.

ON-RAMPS AND OFF-RAMPS IN OUR CAREERS

A career should not be thought of as a straight-line, always advancing path. There are twists and turns in EVERYONE’S career path – no one (man or woman) can say otherwise today (in fact, one’s career today can look more like a “Chutes and Ladders” game).

Here is a great 4-minute video to watch regarding the changing nature of careers. The speaker is Sylvia Ann Hewlett, President of the Center for Work-Life Policy:

Her story may be very much like your own story, if you have had interruptions in your career (her concept of on-ramps and off-ramps). Has this happened to you or someone you know? How do you best deal with time away from your career, and how to make that work to your advantage? How should companies respond to the changing nature of careers?

If you have any ideas on this subject, email me a dwyld.kwu@gmail.com and I will post a follow-up. Look forward to the discussion.

Tragic - condolences to her family - but, as we have learned from countless stories like this - about celebrities, politicians, and yes, real people - not a good idea to have naked pictures (or video) of any kind out there- somehow, they will get out someday from some source.

If you want career advice, why not start at the top – especially when it is free (God bless the Web!). Here is a great 3-minute video to watch regarding your career (and how to best manage in a socially responsible manner) from the Chairman of Nestle, Peter Brabeck:

What did you think about his ideas? How might they apply to your career? To your company? What about work as a “joy,” rather than as an obligation?

Top Fed Official Warns Jobs Will Be Scarce As 'Paradigm Shift' Slows Hiring

Not a "rosy scenario." It is hard to disagree with her prognostications - we won't see the "V" happen - more like an L with a slight rise in the horizontal graph over time. That doesn't, however, help the un- and under-employed. And for those I see every day in college, it's tough looking out over the horizon.

DEALING WITH CONFLICT

OK, like it or not, conflict is a part of all our lives, to one extent or another, both in the workplace and in our personal lives. Thus, how to most effectively deal with conflict, and to manage it effectively when it occurs, is a central task of managing in organizations (and in life itself).

Here is a great video to watch on managing conflict:

At 20 minutes, it is longer than most of the clips that I have posted, but well worth watching and with situations we can all relate too. After watching it, send me any comments that you might have to dwyld.kwu@gmail.com and I’ll post a follow-up with your thoughts.

P.S. Do feel free to pass this posting along to your friends, colleagues, family members – maybe even your boss – to help them with ideas on better managing conflict.

Fed Unemployment Projection: Jobless Rate Will Stay High For Next 2 Years

Well, it is just a sign that we have a really big, systemic problem(s). Very little job creation in the private sector, and government that can not sustain itself. It is quite a predicament - one that will take all of us working together to solve. Yes, the economy will come back to a degree, but not to the 2007 levels, and that is a long-term issue to have unemployment - and underemployment - rates as high as they really are today.

TEAMWORK IN SPORTS - "THE INCHES IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE"

So many times, we think of the ‘great coach speech’ that happens pregame or at halftime that makes all the difference. Sometimes, that is true both in real life and in the movies (Witness Sean Payton at the 2010 Super Bowl, firing-up the New Orleans Saints by telling them they were going to do something that had never been tried in a Super Bowl before – trying an on-sides kick to start the second half to keep the ball away from Peyton Manning and the Colts {putting Coach Payton forever in Super Bowl lore and helping the Saints win the first ever Super Bowl!}).

While reality is great, the movies are even better. One of the best inspirational movie speeches of all time is that given Al Pacino in ‘Any Given Sunday.’ View the clip of the speech below (warning, there is 1 expletive in it, but it is in context – just makes it not ‘kid-friendly’):

Do you agree with his proposition that life and football are both ‘games of inches?’

Also, do you have a personal sports story to discuss? Do you have another clip of a ‘coach speech’ from another movie to suggest to the class? Post these here as comments or better yet, send them to me at dwyld.kwu@gmail.com and I will post a compilation here.

Look forward to the discussion.

9.7%...or 19.7%. The sad thing is that we REALLY don't know what the true un- and under-employed rate is in America.
