INSTANT MBA: Content Is King

Today's advice comes from Bill Watkins, CEO of Seagate:

"People worry that newspapers are going out of business. So what? It's the content that's important.

No one gives a sh*t about the delivery mechanism. Think about mail. You had the Pony Express, truck delivery, airmail, email. You don't care how it gets to you.

I read more now than I ever did, but I get it off my PC. I don't need to go down to the end of the driveway and pick up the newspaper."

"It's the content that's most important."

Bill Watkins

Content is definately king, because all they care about is the content, not how it gets to them. People could care less how it gets to them. They dont care if the paperboy throws the paper to their front door or if a giraffe walks it to their doorstep! All that matters is the fact that they get their paper. People only care about content.

Anonymous said...

People want to know one thing and that is content. As long as the content arrives at a constant, timely fashion, people will take it however it comes. Information grants knowledge so content is always expanding. It will also ALWAYS be in constant demand by society. Normal life cannot function without content.

Linh said...

I agree that content is the most important. No one cares how it delivered. If you can get the content promptly and at a click of the mouse without walking to your drive way, why not?

Sherrie said...

Who can argue with that? He is right. Everyone just wants to know the gossip, they don't care who told them. Information is key/king. I don't pick the newspaper unless it's the free one at school. You are not going to miss the headlines, you are bound to see it online or on the t.v.

Unknown said...

I agree. Get rid of all books and newspapers; while your at it get rid of letters. All information is digital now, and as he said the content is all that matters not the delivery system.

kady said...

I don't agree with that. Not everyone depends on digital for everything. Like my dad, he still reads the newspaper. He's not really that good on a computer. So i don't really see why it matters if everything is digital or not.

drew.oster said...

I agree that the most important thing is the content of the news. I really don’t think most people will care how it is delivered, the most important thing is that it is delivered.

Anonymous said...

People in our generation really don’t care, they just want it now!

This is an amazing quote, “I read more now than I ever did, but I get it off my PC. I don't need to go down to the end of the driveway and pick up the newspaper." This actually shows us the power of technology and that time is precious. Me personally I believe that taking a walk to the end of the drive way for a newspaper will not hurt. I still like to read the newspaper from time to time.

Anonymous said...

I think I have been reading a lot since I got my laptop. There are so many things online that I can read with so many different subjects it gives me a variety. I read a lot of different sports articles that would be a lot harder to obtain if I didn't have the internet at my disposal.

Kellie Williams said...

I like how this guy is really straightforward. Content is definitely more important than the delivery mechanism. Who cares how we get information as long as we get it? Although I do understand this is a concern for the newspaper companies for a fear of going out of business.

Anonymous said...

This is so true. Nobody cares about the existence of newspapers except the newspapers themselves these days. Its all about the content, and access to the content is so much cheaper via the web.

Although what Bill Watkins said is true, that many are concerned about there being no more newspaper, well the same may be true about the mail too. Today many people don’t just sit down and write a letter any more. Most communication is done through some sort of electronic device, whether it’s a pc or Smartphone. But again it’s not how you get it; it’s what’s in it

Anonymous said...

I agree with Bill Watkins. His approach reminds me of the old saying "Don't judge a book by it's cover." The cover of a book could be hideous or even blank; but the inside could be the best book you have ever read.

Anonymous said...

I do not think that newspapers will go out of business because there are still some people who refuse to get a computer and use the internet. However, I do agree with Bill, it is the content that is important. People are always going to want to know what’s going on and particularly do not care where the information comes from.

Ms. Brittany said...

I totally agree with this article. Its the content of anything that determines how effective it is. I believe this applies to any and everything, especially education. People could care-less how u got your education, but its the quality and content of your education that matters most.

Anonymous said...

Content is becoming more important than ever. It needs to be accurate and fast in this day and age. Our generation is built on speed so content has to keep up in order to be successful. I agree, I do not care how I get it, just as long as I read it and learn from it.

Whitney said...

I actually enjoy the newspaper. I look forward to reading it every Wednesday afternoon to see who in my hometown has gotten married, had a baby, and other things going on in the town. I life in a small town so you don't miss much but I love reading the paper and catching up on everything once a week.

Anonymous said...

As long as I get the information I need, I really don't care how it gets to me. If I can get it easier on a computer, I will, without cutting down a tree.

Jerry said...

The newspaper is very unique. I enjoy reading the newspaper but why pay for the newspaper when I can just read it on the web. I do think that it should all go digital in some way. I give newspapers a few more years before they areon the internet only.

Kelly Guerin said...

Even though I do not read the newspaper or even watch the news, I do agree that content is very important. It doesn't matter how it is delivered as long as the person reading the news get it some way whether it's from the internet or a paperman. I think it would be more convenient to read it online, but I don't understand why that means newspaper will go out of business because they can just have a website and allow each subscriber to pay a monthly or yearly fee.

Heather Cosentino said...

In today’s world there are many different ways this information can get to me. I really do not care how it gets to me as long as it does. This newspaper is very interesting but why would I pay for it when I can just look at it on the web for free. I think they may have to think of another marketing strategy.

John Stiles said...

I don't really agree with this completely. I can name a handful of people that don't hardly watch tv or rely on any other means of digital media. While the digital media market is taking over and is the fastest, there are still a few old timers.

Anonymous said...

Today’s advice from the CEO of Seagate Bill Watkins was great advice. People worry that newspapers are going out of business, so what, it’s the content that is important. People will take it however it comes as long as it comes in a timely fashion.

Anonymous said...

I do not get the newspaper at my apartment here in Hammond, however, my parents do get the newspaper in New Orleans and while I do not read it on a regular basis, I do enjoy being able to pick it up every once in awhile and read it. For the most part, I get my information on the internet and it seems so much easier to access on the internet. However, the newspaper is always awesome to have for special headlines such as the Saints winning the SuperBowl.

ChrisSaintsedo said...

I read the paper when it is available but I agree with Mr. Watkins. Yes while people who work for the newspaper losing their jobs is disheartening it is a part of life. We are constantly evolving and it is the content that does matter. I find now I am more informed in whats going on in the world because it is all at my fingertips. We take for granted that we were lucky enough to group up in an age of understanding and I think that newspapers served their purpose but now, as we evolve, so shall our means of information.

Jamie said...

I agree that it is the content that matters, not the way you get the information. I don't ever watch the news because of lack of time, but I can always access the same information from my phone or on the website. I think with the busy lives of individuals today, there needs to be several different ways of retrieving information. Also, with new technology, it makes it not only easier, but quicker to retirieve information.

Anonymous said...

This was an interesting article. I personally do not care how I get the information as long as I get it. But our generation wants it to be fast and easy to obtain. There are still people out there who do not have to have it digital there is nothing wrong with that but I will not be surprised if everything turns digital soon.

Melissa said...

I agree that content is what is important. It does not matter how you are exposed to new or such, jus that you are exposed to it. So that you have a clue what is going on in the world. And who does not like getting mail. I love when I get letter and such in the mail; it makes me feel important. But I don’t like when it is bills I get lol.

Ciji Rodrigue said...

It’s so true that newspapers are becoming obsolete, all we have to do to get news now is pull up a news site on an iPhone for free. It’s that simple. People just want the news, message or gossip instantly we do not care how we receive the message. I feel like I have no reason to look at a newspaper because I watch the news every morning. It is all about the content.

N.Jones said...

This is true, but is still enjoy the newspaper even though its becoming obsolete. It really doesnt matter how I get my information as long as I receive it!

Unknown said...

Content is definitely a huge part of today’s society. The majority of content is gotten from books, magazines, tv, and online adds. Since there’s such a wide range of ways to get whatever content we desire. We also have to remember that content is only as good as the news that is in it.

Reno said...

What can I say except "How true." Thanks to technology I read stuff that I would have never in a million years thought that I would read. From CNN on my phone to Leaves of Grass on my eReader, technology has put the world of reading at my fingertips.

P.S. I am reading Leaves of Grass and it isn't for a grade.

Rob J said...

With all the commotion about the environment and being "green", you would think that most people would support newspapers dissapearing. Think of all the paper that could be saved if newpapers didn't exist. In my opinion, the world revolves around convienince. Regardless of media type, people are going to get important information they need one way or the other. Imagine scheduling classes without Leonet. It would be a nightmare. It's all about convenience.

Seth B. said...

Content is definitely the most important thing. As stated in the article, the delivery system of the content is changing. However, that shouldn't matter. The only thing that needs to be focused on is that the content is just at thorough as before.

Avalon said...

I do believe that content is king and I do feel that most people really don't care how it comes. I know that I definitely keep up with the news much more now that it's instantaneous on my computer.

Anonymous said...

Content is important but I don't know about "king." I really enjoy sitting down, relaxing reading the newspaper. It's a good time-out from everything. Of course we all like the convenience of the internet so I like both ways.

Wesley Borne said...

In today’s world there are several different ways information can get to me. It really doesn't matter to me how the information gets to me as long as it does. This newspaper was very interesting but why would I pay for it when I can just look at it on the web for free. I think they have to think of another marketing strategy or a way to make you pay for it before you view it online.

Anonymous said...

Content is very important in today's society. When someone is waiting to receive something, they are more concerned with receiving the content than how it gets to them.

Anonymous said...

I agree. Who cares how the news gets to you. If a newspaper isn't online by now; it kind of deserves to go out of business. I agree with the quote about reading more. I am way more up to date with the news since its so convenient to get to. As lond as the information is good thats all that matters.

matthew.lancie said...

Bill Watkins is right when he says content is king. It is all about if you get your mail or news, not how you get it. With today’s technology, you can check a score of a baseball or find out about stocks just from hitting an app on your phone.

Chelsea Tucker said...

This is very true. You only care about the content! People are using the internet to get their information because it is so convenient and you can more easily select the type of content that you are interested in reading. However, I wouldn't say that the newspaper isn't important and that it wouldn't matter if it disappeared. Newspapers provide a lot of jobs, especially for those who actually deliver them!

dwayne said...

Very true, we don't care how the information gets delivered as long as we get it. Newspapers going out of business shouldn't be surprising to anyone.

Joel said...

A much as I would hate to say it, the article is correct. My household no longer gets the newspaper because NOLA.com has the Times Picayune sections, something that you don't have to pay monthly or yearly for. I have not known any person to send a letter as it makes no sense at all anymore. With outlets such as email, instant messenger and even Facebook, there is no need to waste paper and resources on letters and such. With how far we have come, I can do all these things directly from my phone.

Unknown said...

"Content is king" is a very true statement. I agree with this post and like it very much. This information is factual and informative. I think people today easily get false news and are always concerned about the content of their information.

Jess said...

I agree that content is the most important aspect of news and delivery method is not of importance. This is true in my life because when i want to read the news i want to read it then and usually do so on my computer or phone, and often i do not have hands to lug around a newspaper to read between classes. But i like that i can online i can choose the content sources i want to read that might be limited to me in other forms because of my location.

Anonymous said...

It is a fallacy that the delivery method matters at all. Whether you read it in print or online, people still say they read it "in the paper." People are simply looking for good quality content that's easily accessible, and just because they read it in a different way doesn't mean it matters any less. Some people prefer one medium to another but their expectations for what they're reading are the same and always have been. Does it matter if your relative sent you a note in the mail or posted on your Facebook wall? No. What matters is that they're keeping in touch with you.

Anonymous said...

The statement "content is king" is so true. Thanks to the internet I am reading and learning about all kinds of things. Before the internet, people did not have the luxery of just looking something up or getting news whenever they wanted.

Daniel Cashio said...

The statement is very true. Although delivery is important at times, people of today's world just want the meat of anything. Just get it to me, it doesn't matter how.

Josh Coryell said...

Content is the most important thing. A lot of newspapers are getting away from that, and it really is a shame. I want to read unbiased news, not some news journalists opinion on what I need to hear or from what side of the political line the story needs to be told. It's pathetic that the only reason the Boston Globe is still in business is its sports section.

Staci said...

You can get an online newspaper over the internet, but I know the local Hammond paper is a day or two behind what it prints on paper. They have their way around people using the net instead of buying subscriptions.

Unknown said...

I highly doubt that newspapers will go out of business. There are people that do not have a computer, much less internet access in their own home. But I do have to agree with how many people want their info promptly.

Vernon Blackledge Jr said...

Any one who thinks that in ten or twenty years they are going to be reading from a physical newspaper is insane in my opinion. With the tablet market opening so strong, it is only a matter of time before all our magazines and newspapers are only in digital form. Soon our kids will require a tablet device starting in elementary school. Frankly our planet needs this technology, before all the trees are cut down.

Lindsay said...

I agree that content is what really matters. In some situations delivery is important, but the content is what really matters. I do think the newspaper is still important. My great granny still reads her newspaper everyday, so for her delivery is important because she does not understand how to work a PC. I understand where Bill Watkins is coming from, but delivery is important for some people.

Anonymous said...

I agree 100%, it has always been about the content and will always be about the content. We live in a technical world of course things are going to change people need to just deal with it.

Peter_is_a_Star said...

This is true. I don't care how I get my information as long as I get. I want the content to be vast in value, but I don't care about the form. Information is power and the way it gets to me has to be fast.

Anonymous said...

I agree that it does not mater how we get our information. The content that we read is the most important thing. I am actually more likely to read things on the internet than in a book or newspaper. The convenience of the internet makes it very hard to get your information from anywhere else.

Unknown said...

Bill Watkins definitely has point in this article. News will always be news, it just matter about the content of the news. I still read newspaper now a day even with all the update i have on the internet.

Unknown said...

I agree with this article. We as a society just want the information or content. with everyone basically having access to a computer it is too easy to turn to the online media than it is to actually go out and buy a newspaper and have to carry that around with you as well as the rest of your stuff. Newspapers are a dying era.

Stuart said...

Mr. Watkins is so right, people strive for convenience. When someone wants to know about something they go about it in the most convenient and quickest way. Why go through the trouble of searching through a newspaper when you can just type in a search on what you want to know.

candace said...

I do think that content is king. Most people in today's society get their content from the internet and TV. However there are still those older people that still rely on things like the newspaper because they arent familiar with the computer world.

Erica Huval said...

This is true. Times are changing and the way people stay informed is also involving. Now people get news sent directly to their phone. I believe this is a step in the right direction because with it being more readily available I believe people will know more about what is going on in the world than ever before.

Daniel Berthelot said...

Yes I believe this because I know that I don't care how information is sent to me as long as I can understand it in order to perform what I need to. So content is defintely king.

Anonymous said...

Content is the king. In today’s society convenience is also the key. Having something at click of a button is preferred over the traditional way to get info.

Unknown said...

That is completely true. Most of the time the newspaper does not even put everything in it that you can find on the web. The newspaper is primarily used for older people that do not use internet. I would prefer to get my newspaper via email or just look it up my self.

Nick Cruise said...

What he is saying is very true. Times are changing and so what if there are no more newspapers being thrown on to your driveway. If you can get the news you want in an easier way then that is what you should do. I personally just search the internet for things I want to learn about.

Cory Y said...

I definitely agree with this statement. With the internet making everything more accessible, newspapers will continue to die out. I'm not saying that they will go out of business; there just won't be a demand for paper newspapers. I read the USA Today every day, but I read it on my phone.

Coco said...

This is very true. It is important for people to realize that they are so fortunate to be able to even receive the amount and quality of information that is readily available to the public. Its not about he delivery, it's about the content--well put.

Cody T. Francis said...

I agree, people don’t seem to really acre how the get information as long as they get it. I enjoy reading the paper more than reading on the computer or some other screen but I think the majority of people couldn’t care less about how the receive their news.
