From Susan M. Heathfield, your Guide to Human Resources

Vol. 12 No. 91 - ISSN: 1533-3698 July 2, 2011

Dear People:

Values matter. The longer I work with organizations, the more I recognize that the guiding principles or values espoused by the organization really do matter. Values are not just a consultant's concept that everyone else sort of "buys into." They form the fundamental core of how a business interacts with its employees, customers, vendors, and the community, and how the employees interact with each other. Think more about the concept of what value statements communicate. Is the organization employee-oriented? Or, do they just pay lip service to the concept? Do people get fired for mistakes or are they lauded for trying something different. Do people closest to the process and need make the decisions? Are their decisions honored where possible? What do you really stand for? And, does everyone in your organization stand for that, too? Here's how you can build a values-based organization. Have a lovely 4th of July weekend.

Regards and wishing you and yours the best this weekend,

Susan

Use Termination Letters

Termination letters are neither pleasant to write nor pleasant to receive in most cases. But, termination letters are an essential component of an employment termination. They confirm the details of the employee dismissal. They also give the employee the status of any severance package, and more about the employment termination.

Ask the Best Interview Questions

Many employers spend a lot of interview time asking potential employees questions such as, "what would you do if ..." Now, I do believe some decent knowledge about the candidate's qualifications can come from such questions. I have even heard myself ask them in the past despite the fact that I know a better way to interview.
