Minutes before Ginger White, 46, claimed she had a 13-year affair with Herman Cain in a televised interview, the GOP presidential hopeful appeared on CNN to shoot down the rumors. A campaign organizer accused White of being a “stalking, defaming libeler.” Cain’s lawyer, however, offered comments that practically confirmed it: “This appears to be an accusation of private, consensual conduct between adults,” said Lin Wood. The Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz on whether Cain can survive the new round of scrutiny—especially given that Newt Gingrich is surging ahead of him in the polls. Elections It feels good to vote: Egyptians continued a second day of parliamentary voting Tuesday, after a huge turnout on Monday. While there were some logistical problems at the polls Monday, fears of violence went unrealized as people voted in what the parties believe will be a record turnout. The Muslim Brotherhood estimates turnout at around 30 percent—a number it is apparently pleased with. Some voting lines are said to have stretched two miles, according to the BBC. Business American Airlines’ parent company, AMR Corp., filed Tuesday for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. With this move, all the major U.S. airlines have now restructured under Chapter 11. American was always the most resistant to Chapter 11, but came around to a bankruptcy filing after failing to agree to money-saving labor agreements and struggling against a series of industry mergers that knocked it from the world’s largest airline to just the third-largest in the U.S. According to the Dallas Morning News, CEO and chairman Gerard Arpey will step down and be replaced by the company’s president, Tom Horton. Economy Fitch Ratings agency has warned the U.S. that it faces a credit-rating downgrade if the country cannot find a “credible” way to curb its debt over the next two years. As part of the warning, Fitch gave America’s triple-A rating a negative outlook. “The negative outlook reflects Fitch’s declining confidence that timely fiscal measures necessary to place US public finances on a sustainable path and secure the US triple A sovereign rating will be forthcoming,” the company said in a note. 2012 Newt Gingrich is making his appeal to anti-Romney Republicans explicit: “I don't claim to be the perfect candidate,” Gingrich told an audience in South Carolina Tuesday. “I just claim to be a lot more conservative than Mitt Romney.” Without naming Romney, Gingrich attacked politicians who “adopt radically different positions.” “I wouldn't lie to the American people,” he said. “I wouldn't switch my position for political reasons.” Democrats, however, are mostly ignoring Gingrich and focusing their attacks on Romney. | |
