| | December 09, 2011 | | INEVITABLE Twenty-six out of 27 European Union nations voted Friday for a Franco-German plan that would require all budgets to be approved by the governing body in Brussels—with Britain being the lone standout. Why would Britain—a country not even on the euro—give up basic sovereignty for a safer future for a currency it doesn’t even share—especially when a new treaty would hobble London’s financial sector, asks Andrew Sullivan on The Dish. HEIR APPARENT Looks like the oracle of Omaha has another prophecy up his sleeve. In an interview that will air Sunday, Warren Buffett told 60 Minutes that he will name his son Howard as his successor at Berkshire Hathaway. Howard, or “Howie,” as he is known in the family, will serve as a “guardian” of the company’s “values” rather than CEO, as long as the company’s board approves. When Warren Buffett dies, Howard, who is currently a corn and soybean farmer, will become the “non-executive chairman,” an unpaid position. Buffett said he worried that “somebody will be in charge of Berkshire that uses it as their own sandbox in some way,” and “having Howie there serves as an extra layer of protection.” SHOOTOUT A crazed gunman randomly shot at passing motorists in Hollywood on Friday, hitting one man in the head who was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Witnesses saw the gunman and hailed down police offers, who were working on a movie set nearby, according to the LAPD. The officers rushed to the scene and immediately fired at the suspect, who was pronounced dead. One bystander told a local TV station he heard nine to 12 shots, and saw the gunman aiming at cars. TRAGIC Details are slowly emerging on Thursday’s shooting at Virginia Tech. Police said Friday that the man found dead in a parking lot was the gunman who killed police officer Deriek W. Crouse. Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller told a news conference that authorities have identified the shooter, but won't release his name until they get final confirmation from a medical examiner. Crouse was a 39-year-old Army veteran and the father of five children. The same gun was used on both Crouse and the shooter, suggesting a murder-suicide. Police have not figured out why the shooter targeted Crouse. "That's very much the fundamental part of the investigation right now," said Geller. SECOND THOUGHTS Now that Donald Trump’s Republican debate has become a Newt Gingrich–Rick Santorum debate, the real-estate impresario is reconsidering his plan. Asked by Don Imus whether he’d still do it, Trump said, “I don’t know, I have to look into it.” He had sharp words for Michele Bachmann, however, who he said asked him to be his running mate. “She’d call me, she’d ask me for advice,” Trump said. “She said I should be her vice presidential … if she wins, she’d like to think about me for the vice presidency.” Her rejection of his debate, then, stung especially hard. “It’s unbelievable,” said Trump. “It’s called loyalty. How do you do that?” | |
