Perry's Iowa Ad Causes Staff Revolt Rick Perry's political campaign may be ending as ineptly as it began. Some of his staff is apparently in revolt over his recent anti-gay turn, which has included an ad attacking openly gay soldiers. According to The Huffington Post, Perry's top pollster, Tony Fabrizio, sent the ad's creator an email calling it "nuts." But is the controversial Iowa ad even worth it? Britain Left Out of EU Deal Does this really sound like the best compromise? The European Union agreed to have closer ties to prevent another debt crisis—but the deal left out Britain. Representing one of the biggest economies in Europe but not a member of the euro zone, British Prime Minister David Cameron had sought exemption from certain financial regulations. France and Germany had originally hoped all 27 EU members would agree to new reforms, but decided to move ahead with strict budget rules and fiscal integration between 23 nations. (Hungary is also sitting out, while Sweden and the Czech Republic are still considering joining.) It's unclear still how the rules will be enforced; the participating countries said they hope to ratify the new treaty by March. Virginia Tech Cop Was Dad to Five Details are still thin on Thursday's shooting at Virginia Tech, with the shooter's identity still under wraps. The cop he killed was Deriek W. Crouse, a 39-year-old Army veteran and the father of five children. Police believe the shooter turned the gun on himself after shooting Crouse during a routine traffic stop, although they have not confirmed that the second body they recovered was, in fact, the killer's. Police have also not indicated if there was a motive in the shooting. Read it at The New York Times FRIGHTENING 4. Calcutta Fire Traps Hospital Patients A fire broke out in a Calcutta hospital Thursday, killing more than 80 people. The dead are mostly patients but include three hospital staff. Most workers abandoned the patients after the blaze broke out, and Indian officials say they'll prosecute the hospital for violating safety procedures. The blaze, which officials believe started in the hospital's basement, lasted for five hours before fire fighters were able to put it out. Indian police have arrested six hospital workers on charges of culpable homicide. Read it at Associated Press MYSTERIES 5. Missing FBI Agent Releases Hostage Tape The family of Robert A. Levinson, a former FBI agent in Iran who disappeared from a Persian Gulf resort five years ago, posted a video online Friday in which he appears to be held hostage. Received in November 2010, the video shows Levinson saying, "I have been treated well. But I need the help of the United States government to answer the requests of the group that has held me for three and a half years. And please help me get home." The family's decision to release the video is a sign that United States government—which had been treating his kidnapping mainly as a diplomatic matter—has not made much progress in securing his release. In the year-old plea, Levinson also said his condition was worsening. "I am not in very good health," he said. "I am running very quickly out of diabetes medicine."
