Today's advice comes from IAC's Hatch Labs CEO Dinesh Moorjani's interview with Business Insider: "Put yourself in uncomfortable situations, which will allow you to field new challenges with ease, grace, and confidence." In order to overcome challenges and make difficult circumstances manageable, you need to increase your pain threshold for discomfort as much as possible. In other words, if you're used to working in the U.S., try getting a position in Asia or somewhere where the culture norms are vastly different than your own comfort zone. Before becoming CEO of IAC's Hatch Labs, a mobile technology innovation firm, Moorjani worked for Samsung in South Korea and in Investment Management at Goldman Sachs. He says the discomfort will unlock "second order effects" that are not measurable at first, but will eventually lead to strategic thinking in times of stress, distress or adversity. Moorjani — who earned his MBA from Harvard Business School — says that learning how to cope with being uncomfortable is an empowering strategy that a formal education or MBA can't teach you. The training will develop a "flexibility" in your work style so you'll be able to learn and adapt quickly to a situation and work with various groups of people and cultures. "Once you’ve learned to operate in that environment, you become adept in ways you never anticipated and your thought patterns begin to evolve rapidly."
