Annan presents deadline for peace plan in Syria
UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan has apparently asked the UN Security Council to support a deadline of April 10 for the gradual implementation of his peace plan in Syria. Damascus has reportedly agreed to the deadline.

Hungary's president resigns in plagiarism scandal
Hungarian President Pal Schmitt has resigned after being stripped of his doctorate amid allegations of plagiarism. Schmitt told parliament in Budapest that he felt obliged to quit, having become "a symbol of division."

Wives, daughters of Osama bin Laden jailed in Pakistan
A Pakistani court has convicted five close relatives of deceased al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden for illegally staying in the country. They were sentenced to 45 days in prison, fined, and will subsequently be deported.

West African bloc imposes sanctions on Mali over coup
Mali's neighbors have imposed sanctions on the country in response to a coup in which soldiers overthrew a democratically elected president. The diplomatic, financial and trade embargo was to go into effect immediately.

Britain and Argentina have been marking the 30th anniversary of Argentina's invasion of the Falkland Islands, amid renewed tension in the South Atlantic. Hundreds died during the 74-day conflict.

Plane crashes in Siberia, 31 reported dead
A plane carrying 43 people has crashed in Siberia with Russian emergency officials saying that at least 31 people are confirmed dead.

Ukraine allows ex-premier to leave prison for medical care
Ukraine's prosecutor general has given jailed opposition politician Yulia Tymoshenko permission to get outside medical care for a back condition. Germany is in talks with Ukraine for her to get that care in Berlin.

Once the world's largest solar-cell maker, Q-Cells has announced its filing for bankruptcy - the fourth major German producer to do so.
