The Australian government has appointed a panel to investigate hundreds of child abuse cases within the country's Catholic community that came to light this year. The probe is to cast a wide net over all institutions.

Israel claims 'direct hits' on Syrian artillery
The Israeli military has claimed to have fired on Syrian forces, scoring "direct hits." It said was replying to Syrian mortar shelling of the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.

The European Commission has said it's willing to put on hold fees that non-EU airlines have had to pay in the framework of a carbon emissions trading scheme. But the concession may not last long.
