| | | | | | | | | | Off-Field Problems Have Cost Tyrann Mathieu Millions Rather than attempt a comeback in college and improve his draft stock, former LSU cornerback Tyrann Mathieu will now enter the NFL draft. And his off-the-field problems since being a finalist for the 2011 Heisman Trophy have likely cost him millions on his first NFL contract.
According to both Todd McShay and Mel Kiper of ESPN, Honey Badger was projected to go as high as the second round before he was kicked off the LSU football team. He is now projected to go in the late third, or early fourth round.
Below is a look at the rookie contracts for the cornerbacks drafted in the most recent NFL draft. Janoris Jenkins, who was drafted early in the second round, signed a contract worth $5.0 million, with almost half of that ($2.1M) as a guaranteed signing bonus. However, players drafted in the late third-to-early fourth rounds signed contracts worth only ~$2.5 million with signing bonuses of ~$450,000.
