Inaugural Address

The president uses his inaugural address to take a veiled shot at Romney, declaring that Americans receiving aid aren't "takers." The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz on a thematic speech that stuck to generalities. Plus, Andrew Sullivan's live-blog, Charles Ommanney's Instagrams, and more coverage of Obama's second inauguration.

Inauguration Day

Welcome back, Mr. President. Obama took the ceremonial oath of office at 11:51 a.m. on Monday, flanked by Vice President Biden, first lady Michelle Obama, first daughters Malia and Sasha Obama, House Speaker John Boehner, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, members of the Supreme Court, and more—and around 600,000 bystanders who cheered "Obama" as the president took the podium. Myrlie Evers-Williams, the widow of slain civil-rights leader Medgar Evers, delivered the prayer, the first time a woman has done so. Sonia Sotomayor, who was nominated by Obama, administered the oath of office to the vice president—who refrained from calling himself the president this time around—while Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath to the president. And the whole affair wasn't flub-free: Obama slightly stumbled over the line "and the office of the President of the United States." Oops.

SHE HAS BANGS?!?

The first lady wore a navy Thom Browne coat and dress custom-made for the day. But what about her hair? The Daily Beast's Allison Samuels talks to Michelle Obama's former stylist.

RECONQUEST

French and Malian on Monday forces retook the key town of Diabaly, which had been held for weeks by rebels that are linked to al Qaeda. Diabaly, located just more than 200 miles from the capital, Bamako, had been the main stronghold of the rebels, and one resident said the rebels had fled the town on Monday. Officials said that Malian and French troops also retook the town of Doutenza, one day after the rebels were reported to have also been retreating from the mountainous region of Kidal. The French-led invasion of Mali began on Jan. 11, while about 150 African troops have joined in the fight so far.

Assault

Three Americans are among those killed in a deadly raid last week in Algeria to rescue hostages taken when Islamic militants overtook a gas facility. Seven Americans made it out safely. The FBI has identified the three Americans as Victor Lynn Lovelady, Frederick Buttaccio, and Gordon Lee Rowan. The death toll currently stands at 57, but nearly 800 hostages are believed to have escaped. Meanwhile, Algerian officials have acknowledged that some of the hostage takers were captured alive. Officials had initially said that all 32 hostage takers were killed, but at least five militants were nabbed while alive.
