Today's advice comes from Scott Griffith, CEO of Zipcar via The Wall Street Journal: "We had a big choice: Should we run a big advertising campaign or not? All my intuition was to hold off, because we really hadn’t figured out what the brand should be and what the right media channels were. I didn’t want to be like an authoritarian CEO, so I let it go [ahead]. It was the biggest marketing spend in the history of the company, and it was a giant flop." When big decisions come up and you're the leader of your company it's really important not to give into outside pressure. While you should always consider your coworker's suggestions and give each of them thorough thought, when it comes down to it, you need to do what's absolutely best for the company. If you're the leader of the company, you owe it to your employees to make the best decision you can based on what you believe is the right direction. "We didn’t get many new members out of it, and it didn’t really raise awareness. I knew that was not going to go very well, and I didn’t make the hard call. Good lesson."
