Protests in Brazil Turn Violent Brazil's widespread protests went from peaceful to violent Monday night, with police in Rio de Janeiro firing rubber bullets and a tear gas at demonstrators who were burning cars and ravaging buildings. Meanwhile, in the capital, Brasília, tens of thousands of people were seen charging on the National Congress building. Two hundred thousand people took to the streets of Brazil's biggest cities to protest government corruption, rising public transportation costs, and the belief that billions of dollars that could have been spent on health care and education were wasted on stadiums and other preparations for the World Cup and the Olympics. The protests—some of the largest Brazil has ever had—coincide with the beginning of the Confederation Cup. Read it at The Guardian STILL SEARCHING 4. Feds Digging for Jimmy Hoffa in Detroit An octogenarian mobster has FBI agents digging holes in a field outside Detroit in hopes of finding the remains of Jimmy Hoffa, the notorious Teamsters boss who went missing in 1975. But while the information provided by alleged gangster-turned-informant Tony Zerilli is believed to be "highly credible," several hours into the search the agents hadn't reported finding anything. Still, the head of the FBI's Detroit office insisted that the digging was justified, telling CNN that Zerilli's intel—which they'd pored over for months before seeking the court's permission to take their shovels to the ground—"reached the threshold of probable cause, which was sufficient to allow us to obtain a search warrant. If it didn't rise to that level, then, certainly, we wouldn't be out here." Read it at CNN FAR-REACHING 5. House to Consider Sweeping Abortion Bill The Republican-led House of Representatives could kick-start a major challenge against Roe v. Wade on Tuesday, as it considers the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, banning almost all abortions after 20 weeks. Though the House is slated to pass the bill, which the National Right to Life Committee's legislative director called the "most significant piece of legislation to come before the House since the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act"—President Obama has already threatened to veto it, though the Senate doesn't even have plans to consider it. Still, eleven states have passed similar laws.
