DECISION DAY

The Supreme Court's promotion of gay marriage this morning was a bit like a shotgun wedding—done with reluctance and without the loving embrace of someone fully committed to the sacred union. The Daily Beast's Adam Winkler on how the Supremes put procedure over people. Plus, Eliza Shapiro on what the decisions mean for gay couples and Daniel Gross on why it all comes back to taxes. Full coverage here.

OBAMA PHONE

The challengers in the Supreme Court case that resulted in the historic decision striking down California's Proposition 8 no doubt expect their phones to be ringing off the hook for the next couple of days, but today's call from President Obama during an MSNBC interview might top them all. An emotional Sandy Stier fought tears as she and her partner, Kris Perry, thanked the president for his support. Over choppy reception (he called from Air Force One), he congratulated the winners. "We're proud of you guys, and we're so proud to have this in California," Obama said. "And it's because of your leadership things are heading the right way. So you should be very proud today." Paul Katami, another plaintiff, added, "You're invited to the wedding!"

MEA CULPA, Y'ALL

The disgraced butter peddler stopped by the "Today" show this morning, where she finally dropped her "old Southern lady" defense and gave what appeared to be a genuine apology for using the N word. Is it time to forgive and forget?

CUFFED AND STUFFED

The New England Patriots announced they had "released" Aaron Hernandez after news of his arrest at his Massachusetts home Wednesday morning, one day after his attorney unleashed an attack on the media for falsely reporting that the police had a warrant for the New England Patriot on an obstruction-of-justice charge. Over the weekend police searched Hernandez's house for evidence related to the death of Odin Lloyd, a friend of the tight end's whom he'd allegedly been with the night he died. It's still unclear whether it was the reported obstruction-of-justice charge that landed Hernandez in handcuffs Wednesday.

Comeback

In a miraculous turn of events, Anthony Weiner is now leading the pack of Democratic candidates for New York City mayor. The former U.S. representative, who resigned in disgrace two years ago after accidentally tweeting a lewd photo of himself intended for a woman who was not his wife, got the nod from 25 percent of registered Democrats who responded to a recent Wall Street Journal/NBC 4 New York/Marist poll while only 20 percent said they're in favor of Quinn—the lowest the City Council speaker has polled since entering the race.

The President Is Calling

Obama placed a phone call to the Prop 8 plaintiffs to congratulate them on the Supreme Court's decision. And he scored himself a wedding invite along the way.
