IS IT SAFE?

Might need to reschedule your Afghanistan vacation plans. The State Department issued a worldwide travel alert for U.S. citizens on Friday, citing an unspecified al Qaeda threat. "Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," it read. The caution follows the closing of at least 18 embassies and consulates in the Middle East and North Africa planned on Sunday and possibly beyond, depending on a threat analysis by the State Department. Officials said the threat could be tied to the end of Ramadan, a monthlong period of prayer and fasting in the Muslim faith.

WORKING POOR

At Detroit's Moo Cluck Moo, the healthy burgers and chicken menu come with another twist: a living wage for employees. Daniel Gross reports on their ethical bottom line.

Recovery

The economic recovery continues to chug slowly along. The unemployment rate dropped to 7.4 percent, the lowest rate since December 2008, but only 162,000 new jobs were created in July, fewer than economists expected. The number of new jobs was revised down for both May and June as well, and the labor force participation rate—the share of people with jobs or actively looking for them—remained about the same. Most of the gains came in retail, food services, and the financial industry.

HIS ROYAL HIGHNESS

Nearly two weeks after the future King of England came into the world, Prince George's birth is finally official. His parents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, signed George's birth register at Kensington Palace Friday morning. The register includes not only the birth certificate but reveals the little prince's full name: His Royal Highness Prince George Alexander Louis of Cambridge.

Jimmy Fallon Sings 'Blurred Lines'

J-Fal and the Roots reprised their classroom instruments shtick with Robin Thicke Thursday to sing the hit 'Blurred Lines.' It's funny, though there's something off-putting about hearing the rapey song sung with kids' toys.
