LOSER

Why is the U.S. lagging behind our peers in educating our students? The Daily Beast's Dana Goldstein on a new book with a startling conclusion: they value intellect more than we do.

RISING STAR

He was Osama bin Laden's personal secretary, a bodyguard in Tora Bora, and even a Yemeni Steve McQueen. But with his promotion last week, he's now a big U.S. target. The Daily Beast's Eli Lake reports.

DEVELOPING

A Turkish Airlines pilot, co-pilot, and four other plane crew members were in a minibus on the way to Rafik Hariri International Airport in Beirut at 3 a.m. Friday when they were accosted by a pair of vehicles equipped with eight armed men. The pilot and co-pilot were kidnapped, leaving the rest of the crew behind on the bus. No one has claimed responsibility for the abduction yet, but it may have had something to do with Lebanese support of the Syrian rebels fighting against Bashar al-Assad's regime, though the Lebanese government has officially remained neutral on the conflict. Nine other Lebanese citizens have been kidnapped and held for over a year by Syrian rebels who allege that the citizens are Hezbollah affiliates. The ambushed Turkish Airlines bus driver, among others, is being interrogated in the investigation to determine who is responsible.

ERASED

The 44-year-old man who threw grenades into two houses and shot four people to death in Dallas Wednesday had his record wiped in a program for veterans trying to get their lives back. Erbie Bowser's criminal history, which included major domestic violence, was expunged after he graduated from the program, and he may have lied about his past to get in. Bowser's rampage was targeted at his estranged wife and ex-girlfriend. His wife, Zina Bowser, and her daughter were killed.

TV MAN

Who better to put the "personality" in TV personality than the ever-unpredictable Alec Baldwin? According to Mediaite, the actor is poised to get his own primetime show in the upcoming MSNBC lineup. The show is apparently slated for 10 p.m. EST on Fridays and will revolve around political issues and will undoubtedly showcase Baldwin's outspoken progressive views. Baldwin has been with NBC for years, notably a recently ended seven-year stint on 30 Rock and as a frequent SNL host.
