FISHY MYSTERY

Two giant, bony sea serpents, one 18 feet long, washed ashore in southern California last week, startling local beachgoers, puzzling marine biologists—and giving rise to countless creepy conspiracy theories. Are the oarfish victims of climate change? Prophets of doom? Harbingers of a giant earthquake? Scientist Kevin M. Bailey, author of Billion-Dollar Fish, fishes for an explanation.

RELEASED

An article, then a Facebook backlash, then freedom: Iranian political prisoner Majid Tavakoli has been released after David Keyes, the executive director of Advancing Human Rights, wrote on The Daily Beast questioning foreign minister Javad Zarif over Tavakoli's imprisonment. The article created an uproar in Iran: Zarif reportedly told Keyes he didn't know who Tavakoli was, and thousands of Iranians took to social media to demand how he could be unaware. Keyes then went on Kambis Hosseini's show (he is called the "Iranian Jon Stewart") to discuss Tavakoli further. On Tuesday, Tavakoli was released from prison.

HERO

The Nevada teacher who died protecting his students Monday was a veteran who served in Afghanistan. The Daily Beast's Jacob Siegel spoke with a member of Mike Landsberry's unit about his courage and character.

BAD PRIEST

Somebody needs to go to confession. German bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst has been suspended by the Holy See due to accusations of lavish living, which didn't sit well with the new modest style of Pope Francis. Elst reportedly spent $42 million renovating his residence, leading to an uproar in a country known for its criticism of the church and money (ahem, Martin Luther). The suspension is pending the outcome of an investigation. Elst studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana in the 1980s and was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.

TRAGIC

Nearly 600 dogs have died and 3,600 have been sickened since January after eating jerky, but no one has been able to pin down what has been causing the illness. Ten cats have been sickened as well. Dogs of all breeds, ages, and sizes have been affected, although the pace of the illness has slowed in the past few weeks due to an unrelated recall of jerky treats. The dogs appear to all have eaten chicken, duck, and sweet potato jerky treats, but what ingredient has caused the illness has not been discovered. To determine what is causing the illnesses, the FDA is now asking veterinarians to track and send detailed information about any animals who sickened by the jerky treats, including results of blood and urine tests.
