Breaking Bad

Jofi Joseph, an official in the National Security Staff at the White House, was fired last week after being caught as the tweeter behind @natsecwonk, a feed that's been leaking internal information since 2011. The Daily Beast's Josh Rogin reports.

cold case

In an added twist to the Boston Marathon bombings, prosecutors now say another man tied to the brothers told investigators that the older Tamerlan Tsarnaev was involved with a triple homicide in 2011. The information was gleaned from the record of an interview with Ibragim Todashev, who was fatally shot at his Orlando home after allegedly turning violent during questioning with the FBI and two Massachusetts state troopers. The information became public knowledge Monday after lawyers for Tsarnaev's surviving brother, Dzhokhar, sued for access to documents relating to the case.

U.S. intelligence's credibility overseas has been just a little bit tarnished, so they must see why everyone would rush to believe the Le Monde report, right? National intelligence director James Clapper said Tuesday that the report in French newspaper Le Monde that the U.S. bugged French phones contained "misleading information." In particular, Clapper said the claim that the U.S. recorded 70 million calls between French citizens in a 30-day period is "false." The fallout in the international community over the spying allegations could be problematic for the U.S.: after allegations that the U.S. spied on Brazilian and Mexican leaders, Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff canceled a state visit to Washington, and Mexico's Enrique Pena Nieto said the U.S. promised him an inquiry.

GOOD SIGN?

Here's a silver lining for college students and their families. U.S. tuition rose, on average, 2.9 percent this year, the smallest increase in 30 years, according to a College Board report published on Wednesday. "This does not mean that college is suddenly affordable," warned economist Sandy Baum, a co-author of the report. Baum said it appeared that the skyrocketing tuition costs appeared to be "moderating," but not actually turning around. Public university students felt the pain the most, with tuition increasing 4.5 percent (although still less than 8.5 percent the year before), compared to a 3.5 percent increase at private universities and a 0.5 percent increase at for-profit institutions.

CONGRATULATIONS

Prince George is certainly going to have a lot of godparents looking after him. The heir to the throne, who will be christened on Wednesday, will have seven godparents, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge announced ahead of the ceremony. Since William and Catherine are determined to constantly break tradition—and are typical millenials—the godparents are mainly old friends and William's cousin, Zara Phillips. Although Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles are among the attendees, the christening will be frighteningly unroyal: it will be a small ceremony and William and Catherine will adorably serve a tier of their wedding cake for guests. The Daily Beast's Tom Sykes reports.
