D.C. CRASH

Miriam Carey, the Connecticut mom who tried to ram her vehicle through the White House gates on Thursday, wasn't even supposed to be in D.C. The Daily Beast's Michael Daly on the "hot-tempered" hygienist who alarmed the capital and died with her toddler still in her carseat.

SHE'S BACK

Just as amazing and batsh*t crazy as you hoped! The gloriously insane Season 3 opener erased any doubts that the gonzo ABC drama could keep up the breakneck-crazy pace of its second season, says The Daily Beast's Kevin Fallon.

Red State Aler

Get aready for this to become the latest political prop in the shutdown battle. With a "near 100 percent" chance that Tropical Storm Karen, currently barreling toward Louisiana, will turn into a hurricane, and other possible weather disasters on the horizon, many of the nation's meteorologists are stuck at home, due to the government shutdown over stalled budget negotiations. Essential personnel are still on the job, but administrators who might help connect offices have been furloughed and most government websites are not being maintained. Obama has been recalling furloughed FEMA employees in case of emergency.

TIME OUT

The latest victim of the budget battle in Congress: preschoolers. Thousands of poor children have been cut from the federal Head Start program in ten states that lost funding on October 1. One of the states, Massachusetts, has provided a stopgap measure, and other states are trying to do the same to keep the pre-K programs open. "I cannot afford to pay child care. I am a single mother with low income and no help from my child's father," one Florida mother wrote in a letter to her senators.

40 years later

In a rare legal victory, a group of Palestinian farmers were granted the rights back for 500 acres of land they had lost 40 years ago to an Israeli settlement. The government had seized the area from residents of Burka in the West Bank. It was used to build the Homesh settlement, which was bulldozed eight years ago during the Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, but the original owners were barred from returning. Last week, the military lifted those restrictions and allowed the farmers back onto their land.
