EAVESDROPPING

An Italian magazine claims the NSA spied on the Vatican and Pope Francis with the complicity of Italy's authorities—but the Holy See seems unfazed. Barbie Latza Nadeau reports.

TAWDRY TABLOIDS

Prosecutors told a London court today that Murdoch's top deputies Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson carried on a six-year affair while running the News of the World, and that they colluded together to hack celebrities' phones. Peter Jukes and Nico Hines report.

ONWARD AND UPWARD

One annoying airline rule will soon be obsolete: "Please turn off all electronic devices." The FAA is easing off its 50-year-old guidelines on the use of DVD players, e-readers, Game Boys, and Discmans (speaking of obsolete) during takeoff and landing. It turns out that most planes' radio signals can withstand your device's interference signals. Phone calls and texting will remain off limits, leaving Flight attendants to worry about more confrontations with rule-breaking passengers. Some expressed concern about passengers "pretending to turn things off even when they're not." So behave—the stewardess is watching you.

MYSTERY

Police say the photographed child resembling Avonte Ocquendo is not, in fact, the autistic and nonverbal 14-year-old who disappeared from his Queens school last month. A 13-year-old riding the NYC subway Tuesday asked someone whose face looked like the one that's been plastered all over New York for nearly a month if he was Avonte. According to the president of the Brooklyn East chapter of the National Action Network, the Avonte look-alike did not respond, so the other boy snapped a photo of him before getting off the train and posted it on his Facebook page—prompting police to investigate. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said last week that he's "not hopeful" that Avonte is still alive.

EGO BOOST

Ouch. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been named the world's most powerful person, knocking President Obama down to number two on the annual list. Forbes cited Putin's expanding control over Russia as well as his significant influence over international relations. Also of note, Pope Francis continues to make waves, as his widespread popularity lands him at the number four spot. Three other Americans landed in the top ten, including Bill Gates (No. 6), Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke (No. 7), and Wal-Mart CEO Michael Duke (No. 10).
