Author Tom Clancy Dies Bestselling author Tom Clancy died Tuesday in a Baltimore hospital, his publisher has confirmed. He was 66. Clancy was the author of dozens of military thrillers, including the bestselling Jack Ryan series (such as 1987's Patriot Games), whose movie adaptations made millions at the box office. Clancy was born in Baltimore, and he later became a part owner of the Baltimore Orioles. He earned $1.3 million for writing the first Jack Ryan book, The Hunt for Red October, and by 1997 he reportedly earned $50 million for his next two books. He also co-founded the videogame developer Red Storm Entertainment and has had his name on some of Red Storm's most successful games. Read it at The New York Times THE GANG'S ALL HERE 3. Obama Hosts Shutdown Summit President Obama called congressional leaders to the White House Wednesday to work out a way to get the government going again, two days into a shutdown that has furloughed hundreds of thousands of federal employees. An administration official says that the president will urge the House to pass a "clean" continuing resolution, without add-ins to defund Obamacare. He's got a daunting referee job ahead of him: invitees Speaker Boehner, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Mitch McConnell have publicly feuded over the spending measure and show no signs of wavering, regardless of the economic consequences. Democrats have said they won't negotiate, while their most conservative GOP counterparts are refusing to bend. Good luck, Mr. President. Read it at The New York Times BLAME GAME 4. Take Your Lumps, GOP Republicans are indisputably responsible for the shutdown, but now they've erupted into a chorus of blaming everyone else. FBI Arrests Silk Road Founder All right dealers, back to the streets. Federal officials have arrested Ross Ulbricht, 29, in San Francisco, and shut down his website, Silk Road, where those in search of illicit substances from Molly to Mary Jane could click and buy with Bitcoin. Authorities also seized 26,000 bitcoins, worth about $3.6 million. The complaint charges Ulbricht, AKA Dread Pirate Roberts, with narcotics trafficking conspiracy, computer hacking, and money laundering, and calls him the owner and operator of an underground site "that provided a platform for drug dealers around the world to sell a variety of controlled substances," outside the reach of law enforcement or governmental regulation.
