The Cynical Girl: F@%k It Friday: Don Jon

I can’t get it out of my head.

A New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt wrote and directed the film. The writing is so solid and the movie gets stronger — not weaker — in the final act.

Scarlett Johansson rolls out her best SNL/Jerz accent and it is hilarious to watch.

But the real star of the movie is Julianne Moore. She acts as a catalyst for love. She changes the main character’s life. But she also plays a different kind of older woman. She has a very compelling back story that centers around motherhood, loss and redefining how she cares for others. We also see how she lets herself be cared for by others.

Her character is brave and raw.

Anyway, the movie starts out as a fun story about pornography but ends with important and healthy lessons about intimacy, love and recovery. And every sex scene includes a condom. Amazing.
