Dow Passes 16,000 For First Time At least one part of the economy is going gangbusters. The Dow Jones Industrial Average topped 16,000 for the first time, continuing what has been a yearlong surge in the U.S. stock market. The S&P 500 topped 1,800 and the Nasdaq hovered near 4,000.  Despite slow growth in employment, company earnings have remained high, and the Federal Reserve's expansionary monetary policies have buoyed confidence in the stock market.  Read it at the Wall Street Journal OMERTA 3. Insurance Commissioner Loses Job One day after questioning the White House's move to allow noncompliant health plans to continue after the botched healthcare rollout, D.C. insurance commissioner William P. White was fired. White was brought in on Friday by a deputy of Mayor Vincent Gray, and told the mayor "wants to go in a different direction." Just the day before, White had argued against the president's move, saying, "The action today undercuts the purpose of the exchanges, including the District's DC Health Link, by creating exceptions that make it more difficult for them to operate." While the mayor's office refused to comment, a source told the Washington Post that White had failed to go through the proper channels before making a statement critical of the president. Shots Fired at Paris Newspaper Paris police are on a manhunt after a gunman opened fire at a newspaper office, shooting a photographer's assistant twice near the heart, police said. The gunman fled after the attack, and there was no indication of his motive or why he chose the offices of Liberation. A gunman also opened fire at the bank Societe Generale nearby, and there were no injuries. Another man was carjacked in the same neighborhood. In yet another incident, a gunman broke into BFMTV on Friday and threatened journalists before leaving. The description of the man at Liberation matched the man who broke into BFMTV. Princeton Battles Meningitis Outbreak Princeton University is in the midst of an odd, slow-motion outbreak of an unusual strain of the dreaded disease meningococcal meningitis. The situation is sufficiently dire that the Princeton Board of Trustees met over the weekend to decide whether to recommend that students receive a vaccine that is available in Europe and Australia but not approved for use in the United States.
