FRIENDLY FIRE

Once again, it's not a good day for health-care reform. As the Wall Street Journal reports that fewer than 50,000 Americans have been able to enroll in online health exchanges, former president Bill Clinton joined the bandwagon in criticizing Obama for a wave of canceled policies. "I personally believe, even if it takes changing the law, the president should honor the commitment the federal government made to those people and let them keep what they got," Clinton said in an interview. The Daily Beast's Ben Jacobs reports.

TAKEOFF

We are now ready for takeoff. The proposed merger between American Airlines and U.S. Airways has achieved a preliminary agreement with the Justice Department. As a result of the tentative deal, the two companies would part with 104 slots at Reagan National in Washington, 34 slots at La Guardia in New York and other slots in Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles. The agreement would avert a trial on the lawsuit by the DOJ, and was a condition of a ruling allowing American to exit from bankruptcy proceedings. The deal still must be approved by the Federal District Court in the District of Columbia.

WTF

Oh dear. Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen threw in an off-hand comment about interracial marriage in his Tuesday column, causing an Internet storm. When writing about how Chris Christie won't be able to overcome the Tea Party (an argument that's kind of stretch anyway), Cohen writes "people with conventional views must repress a gag reflex when considering the mayor-elect of New York—a white man married to a black woman with two biracial children. (Should I mention that Bill de Blasio's wife, Chirlane McCray, used to be a lesbian?)" Obviously, the Internet was outraged. The Daily Beast's Jamelle Bouie called the column "terrible" and "ignorant."

HISTORY

Plans for a new hotel in New York have been halted by the discovery that the building site may be the original location of the famed Bull's Head Tavern, a bar Washington visited during the British occupation of the city.

HE'S IN

Welcome to television. New York Times media reporter Brian Stelter will be leaving the paper to host CNN's Reliable Sources, he confirmed on Tuesday via tweet (naturally). Stelter, 28, has been a star reporter for the Times and has become well known throughout media for his Twitter presence—and his ability to break news via social media. Stelter once said he "would not leave the Times for a television job." Never say never, Brian. In other gossip for media people, New York Times magazine editor Hugo Lindgren is reportedly leaving after three years. Lindgren's time at the helm of the magazine had been tumultuous, including several personnel changes.
