INSTANT DEATH
After four days of searching for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, we still don't know what happened. But without any distress calls from pilots or a speck of debris, it's clear that whatever it was, it happened fast, explains Clive Irving.
NOT MR. POPULAR
A year ago this week, Jorge Mario Bergoglio became Pope Francis and one of the most admired pontiffs in recent history. But that doesn't mean everyone has joined in the Francis fan club, Barbie Latza Nadeau writes. Conservative Catholics believe he's gone too far in his mercy toward divorced couples and gays, while liberal Catholics think he hasn't done enough to tackle the child sex-abuse scandals. Inside the dissident voices within the church.
SAD BUT TRUE

A new study published in JAMA Pediatrics confirms what many probably suspected regarding the detrimental effects of bullying: a significantly greater likelihood of suicide attempts. Teens who were bullied were 2.5 times as likely to attempt suicide. That likelihood was further increased in teens who were cyberbullied. "This might be because with cyberbulling, victims may feel they've been denigrated in front of a wider audience," said study leader Mitch van Geel. However, teens who were involved in either side of bullying also had an increased risk: They were 2.35 times more likely to commit suicide.

SMOKED OUT

Well, we're certainly not in Colorado or Washington state anymore. Los Angeles officials proudly announced they have  shut down more than 100 marijuana dispensaries since last year, when they began enforcing a new law that adds tax and operating requirements. Some of the new regulations include being registered under past Los Angeles ordinances and operating at an adequate distance from public parks, schools, and other facilities. City attorney Mike Feuer said it means any marijuana dispensary that opened since 2013 "can't be lawful." Others argue this creates an unfair monopoly for older dispensaries. Before Proposition D was approved by voters, police estimated that 700 dispensaries operated in Los Angeles, but others say the number is significantly higher.

FRIENDS IN HIGH PLACES

Ever wondered how Kim Jong-un and the North Korea elite managed to snag so many luxuries (and nuclear weapons) despite United Nations sanctions? A new report shows how it's done. A UN panel of eight experts said North Korea manages to facilitate a nuclear and ballistic missile trade through its embassies in Cuba and Singapore. As far as Kim's sweet swag, apparently former NBA star Dennis Rodman is at least partially to blame. The report specifically states that "among items taken by Rodman and his party during their visits were sporting goods from various countries, five bottles of vodka (United States), one bottle of whiskey (Ireland), two whiskey glasses and one whiskey decanter (Ireland), and a Mulberry handbag (United Kingdom) taken by Paddy Power, a company based in Ireland." Basketball diplomacy at its best.
