Cheat Sheet - Hillary Blasts Putin

April 04, 2014
GO GIRL

At the kickoff to the fifth annual Women in the World Summit Thursday night, Hillary Clinton pulled no punches when it came to Russian President Vladimir Putin, reports Nico Hines. "Putin is motivated by the past, to recreate it, reclaim it, restore the proper place of Russia in the world order," Clinton said. "I believe over the long run this is a losing strategy."

MISTREATED

Just like Wednesday's shooting at Fort Hood, the massacre in 2009 ended when the gunman was confronted by a very brave policewoman. In 2009, Kimberly Munle was shot three times taking down Nidal Hasan. Then, she got laid off. Michael Daly reports on how she's never stopped fighting for the victims the military betrayed back then.

LEGEND

There's been no comedy voice more influential to our generation of Americans than David Letterman, writes Pulitzer Prize-winning TV critic Tom Shales. Dave has the quickest wit in late-night television and his sarcastic quips became so infectious that now every weatherman, local news team, and even Good Morning America, copy his style.

FRIENDLY FIRE

Two panels in Congress led by different parties are accusing the CIA of lying this week. In a bizarre twist, Eli Lake writes, Republicans in the House are accusing the CIA of botching the assessment on Benghazi, while Democrats in the Senate are up in arms about the CIA's interrogation program. One thing both sides agree on--the agency needs far more rigorous oversight.

UH-OH

Seeking to dissuade China from solving its territorial claims in Asia like Russia did in Crimea, the U.S. on Thursday reminded the rising power of its commitment to defend Asian allies. Daniel Russel, the U.S. diplomatic point man for East Asia, said the sanctions placed on Russia should have a "chilling effect on anyone in China who might contemplate the Crimea annexation as a model" especially given China's interdependence on neighbors. Russel also referred to what he deemed "intimidating steps" on the part of China by deploying vessels in its dispute with the Philippines in the South China Sea. In addition to the Philippines, China has ongoing territorial disputes with Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan.
