Cheat Sheet - The Supreme Court Defines 'Corruption' Down

Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

April 02, 2014
LEGALESE
The problem at the heart of the Supreme Court's decision in McCutcheon vs. FEC today lies in the ludicrous definition of the word "corruption," Lawrence Lessig writes. Conservative justices eliminated a cap on campaign donations, saying the government can only regulate contributions that are meant to corrupt. The justices believe only bribes are corruption, not donations. The Framers knew otherwise.
DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES
It turns out the Land of the Rising Sun is also the land of rising adultery, Jake Adelstein and Angela Erika Kubo report. Online adultery site Ashley Madison says Japan was the fastest country to reach 1 million users, and the ratio of women to men on the site is about two-to-one. The desperate housewives of Japan are determined to be desperate—and horny—no more.
FRONT LINES
Writing under the pen name Nick Willard, a service member reports for The Daily Beast about the experience serving on the last U.S. deployment to Afghanistan. "The best I can do is illuminate what it's like to be part of a dying conflict," he writes in his first dispatch. "Here's war through the lens of those who are living it, frontier Americans in the 21st century. It's your war, too."
ICE, ICE, BABY
It may sound like a sci-fi fantasy, but injecting patients with an electrolyte solution that freezes cells and organs may soon save lives. Elizabeth Lopatto reports 40 percent of traumatic injury deaths result from blood loss. The "suspended animation" procedure under consideration will leave patients not quite dead but not exactly alive. The procedure is still in development, but stopping the clock may give doctors needed time to save lives.
CLEANING HOUSE
The nation's capital has finally put the kibosh on its scandalous mayoral history, reports Ben Jacobs. Two decades after Washington, D.C. infamously re-elected a post-jail Marion Barry, the city's voters rejected Vince Gray. Plagued by a federal investigation into allegations he had an illegal "shadow campaign" in 2010 to knock off the incumbent mayor, Gray couldn't shake the scandal. Sure, it's not crack cocaine and prostitutes, but it torpedoed this mayor.
