Cheat Sheet - Yes, Stephen Colbert Will Be Great as Host of CBS’s ‘Late Night’

Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

April 10, 2014
HE'S THE MAN
CBS announced Thursday that Stephen Colbert will succeed David Letterman as the host of The Late Show, and it's a brilliant, ratings-boosting move for the network, writes Pete Dominick. Colbert is the perfect choice: Likable the way Jay Leno always was, but with the edge more sophisticated fans want. We'll be sad to see him leave Comedy Central, but his fans will follow him anywhere, and a more accessible variety format will attract new legions.
PLAYING FAVORITES
Twitter is giving a preview of its new, sleeker profile to a select few celebrities: first lady Michelle Obama, Channing Tatum, and… Ayatollah Ali Khamenei? Ironically, while Twitter was considered a voice of the people during the 2009 protests in Iran, the supremely popular social-networking site has decided to offer celebrity treatment to a man who has systematically jailed, executed, and monitored his country's democratic opposition since 1989, reports Eli Lake. Now, Twitter may be helping to build an online following for the man who presides over what the State Department has deemed the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism.
HERE WE GO

On a slim party-line vote of 219 to 205, House Republicans managed to pass the new budget plan from former vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Thursday. The plan, which Ryan promises will balance the budget in 10 years, would cut social programs, grants for college students, as well as spending on research and infrastructure. It contains no increases in tax revenue. In all, 193 Democrats and 12 Republicans voted against the budget, which is widely seen as more of a campaign document.

UNION BACKER
The president got headlines this week for an executive order targeting wage disparities, but far more of his work for unions has flown under the radar—and they'll repay him in November.
OUT OF BOUNDS?

Police are investigating San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick after reports surfaced of a sexual assault in Miami this month. The report states that the investigation is in the "beginning stages" and no one has been charged. The "49ers organization is aware of the recent media report regarding Colin Kaepernick," the team said in a statement, "and is in the process of gathering the pertinent facts." Two other NFL players, 49ers wide receiver Quinton Patton and Seattle Seahawks wideout Ricardo Lockette, are also under investigation, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee. Kaepernick has yet to comment on the allegations.
