Cheat Sheet - ‘He Could Have Brought Ebola Here’

HOMEFRONT

The chill from the hot zone is being felt in summertime Minnesota, reports Michael Daly, as one of its residents died of Ebola in Africa before boarding a flight home. Patrick Sawyer, 40, was supposed to arrive in time for his kids' birthday party. "He could have brought Ebola here," his widow says.

ENDLESS

Roughly 125 people were injured and at least 19 killed Wednesday morning when Israeli shells hit a UN-run school in a Gaza refugee camp, the UN says. According to the director of the UNRWA in Gaza, roughly 3,000 Palestinians were taking refuge at the school. "There were five shells—Israeli tank shells—which struck the people and killed many of them as they slept. Those people came to the school because it is a designated UN shelter," he said. The agency says it is at its "breaking point" with more than 200,000 Palestinians seeking shelter in its buildings after Israel issued a call for civilians to evacuate neighborhoods. Just last week, 15 Palestinians were killed and 200 injured in another strike on a UN school.

HOOKED

While much of the American left has been critical of Israel during its incursion into Gaza, the halls of Congress are filled only with support for the country. Tim Mak reports that grassroots activists have so far failed to get even left-wing Democrats to criticize the war in Gaza.

POSITIVE? NEGATIVE?

In a groundbreaking new study, doctors from Johns Hopkins University have found a genetic mutation that could determine a person's risk of suicide. Brandy Zadrozny reports on the science behind the discovery, and its implications for preventing self-harm.

SUBMERGED

Millions of gallons of water gushing from a water main break spewed for hours on Sunset Boulevard on Tuesday, flooding the University of California, Los Angeles campus. The 90-year-old main sent a geyser shooting 30 feet in the air when it broke and let out between 8 million to 10 million gallons of water before it was shut off more than three hours after the pipe burst. The floodwaters streamed into parking lots, buildings, and athletic fields. At least three people were trapped in cars, and the Los Angeles Fire Department brought in inflatable boats to rescue stranded students and visitors. Large parts of the campus were left covered in mud and water. The recently renovated Pauley Pavilion, home to UCLA basketball and other athletic teams, was at one point blanketed in eight inches of water.
