Cheat Sheet - How ISIS Will Come After the West

Read This, Skip That ....

September 09, 2014
BE PREPARED
When Frenchman Mehdi Nemmouche killed four people in a Jewish museum in Brussels in May, it was considered an isolated incident. In fact, writes Christopher Dickey, it's the shape of terrorism to come. Nemmouche went to Syria to fight for ISIS, and tortured Western prisoners before returning to Europe and striking out on his own. More men, acting in the name of ISIS, will follow in Nemmouche's footsteps.
BLIND EYE
After TMZ posted graphic footage Monday of Ray Rice knocking out his then-fiancée, the NFL quickly claimed it had no previous knowledge of the video. However, it seems increasingly clear that the NFL stuck its head in the sand, as it has done so many times before with players who commit domestic abuse, writes Robert Silverman. The NFL may feign ignorance, but the league isn't innocent.
EXPONENTIAL JUMP

Thousands of new Ebola cases are likely to surface in the coming weeks in Liberia, the hardest-hit nation in the widening epidemic in West Africa, the World Health Organization said. The UN health agency said the disease may infect as many as 20,000 people, and will take six to nine months to contain. The outbreak, the worst in almost 40 years, has so far killed about 2,100 people, more than half of them in Liberia. Other countries hit include Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Nigeria. WHO said in a statement that "the number of new cases is increasing exponentially." Fourteen of Liberia's 15 counties have reported confirmed cases, and Ebola treatment centers immediately overflow with patients as soon as they open.

PROOF

Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was struck by "high-energy objects from outside the aircraft," according to Dutch officials in their preliminary investigative report on the July 17 crash. The findings of the investigation, which is based in The Hague, are consistent with theories that the passenger jetliner was struck by a missile designed to detonate before impact, causing it to crashing in eastern Ukraine. Specifically, the Dutch Safety Board reported that the objects hit the cockpit and front fuselage of the eastbound plane, which suggests they were launched from eastern Ukraine or western Russia. The investigators also found that the "black boxes" hadn't been tampered with, and there were no signs of mechanical or pilot-related failure.

MONEY ON THE HILL

Citizens United may not be long for this world. The Senate voted 79-18 to advance a bill to overturn Citizens United and restore the right of Congress to establish campaign spending limits via a constitutional amendment. It would overturn the 2010 Supreme Court Citizens United ruling that allows independent outside groups to spend on behalf of political candidates. The procedural vote means the Senate can start debating the measure, though it's unlikely to pass the chamber with Republican opposition.
