STRINGS ATTACHED

Everybody was feeling good about the millions of dollars Charles Koch was giving to Florida State University in 2007—until the university found out about the conditions. The Center for Public Integrity reports how the school found itself ordered to give up control of faculty hiring and forced to teach the Kochs' deregulatory zeal.

Judgment

The judge who cleared Oscar Pistorius of murder charges yesterday found him guilty of culpable homicide, or manslaughter, in the shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp last year. Judge Thokozile Masipa announced the decision Friday after going through evidence point by point, as she did when she found the former Olympian not guilty of murder. On Thursday, she had telegraphed the manslaughter verdict when she described some of his actions as "negligent." And she ultimately convicted him of unlawful killing. The track star's defense team had argued that he killed his girlfriend in a panic, thinking she was an intruder and shooting her through a bathroom door at the home they shared. Pistorius also was found guilty of a lesser firearms charge. Pistorius was granted bail after the conviction, and will be sentenced on Oct. 13. He could receive up to 15 years in prison—or be fined and spared incarceration entirely.

GIMME GIMME

While the U.S. is now promising to openly arm the moderate Syrian opposition, it is asking those rebels to just fight ISIS, not Bashar al-Assad. There's just one problem, reports Josh Rogin: They are going to battle the Syrian regime, no matter what the White House says.

BAD APPLE

Jason Mullaney may have been found homeless near a freeway offramp, but he once lived the high life of a con man. Jacob Siegel reports on how the former Navy SEAL who swindled 11 fellow sailors out of more than $1 million.

LOST & FOUND

T.J. Lane, the man who killed three students during an attack at Chardon High School in Ohio two years ago, has been apprehended and is in custody after he escaped from prison, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said. Lane, 19, escaped from the Allen Correctional Institution in Lima, at 7:45 p.m. Thursday with two other inmates. One inmate was soon captured, but Lane remained at large until he was captured at 1:20 a.m. Friday. Authorities launched a search in woods and a residential area near the prison, which is located about 80 miles south of Toledo. Lane pleaded guilty in March 2013 to killing three students at Chardon High on Feb. 27, 2012. He was sentenced to life without parole. At his sentencing, he wore a T-shirt with "killer" written on it, and made obscene gestures toward the victms' families. Another escapee, Clifford Opperud, was still on the lam early Friday.
