Holder's six years in office have seen him deal with everything from civilian trials for terrorists to Ferguson and the problem of race in the criminal justice system. Holder, the first African American attorney general, will reportedly wait to leave once his successor is confirmed. Holder is the fourth-longest serving attorney general in history, as well as one of the longest serving members of President Obama's cabinet. The leading candidate for to fill Holder's shoes is said to be Solicitor General Don Verrilli. Read it at NPR SCAREMONGERING 3. U.S.: Iraq Wrong About ISIS Bombing New York Iraq's prime minister made the scary announcement Thursday that ISIS is planning an imminent attack on New York's subway, but U.S. officials have no idea what he's talking about. "I'm receiving accurate reports from Baghdad that there were arrests of a few elements and there were networks from inside Iraq to have attacks… on metros of Paris and U.S.," al-Abadi said in English at the United Nations in New York. The FBI and NYPD both reportedly checked into the claim and found nothing to support it. The greater worry from U.S. intelligence has come from al Qaeda offshoot, the Khorodan Group. Eli Lake reports the group "went dark" this summer while planning an attack, likely with explosives against U.S. and European airliners. Pope Gets Serious About Sex Abuse Pope Francis just ousted a Paraguayan bishop no one had connected to the Church's sex scandals. While support groups for victims are still calling for more from the Vatican—including specific details and public punishment—Barbie Latza Nadeau writes that the pontiff, on the heels of ex-archbishop Joseph Wesolowski's arrest, is sticking to his "zero-tolerance approach" to sex abuse. Ferguson Police Chief Apologizes In a video message posted online Thursday, Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson apologized to the parents of Michael Brown. "No one who has not experienced the loss of a child can understand what you're feeling. I am truly sorry for the loss of your son. I'm also sorry that it took so long to remove Michael from the street," he said. He also apologized for how police handled protesters in Ferguson, admitting, "The right of the people to peacefully assemble is what the police are here to protect. If anyone who was peacefully exercising that right is upset and angry, I feel responsible and I'm sorry."
