But intelligence officials say they were warning the Obama administration for months, reports Eli Lake. Hong Kong Protesters Fear Martial Law Is Coming Pro-democracy demonstrations dramatically escalated over the weekend in Hong Kong, with tens of thousands of protesters filling the streets. Now, China is getting nervous that the protests may spread to the mainland, reports Gordon G. Chang. If Beijing senses the demonstrations are headed its way, it may impose martial law and resort to deadly force to stem the spread. Read it at The Daily Beast SIMMERING 3. Cops Arrest Ferguson Protesters A small group of protesters were arrested Sunday night in Ferguson, Missouri, for leading a demonstration. Reports have cited different arrest tolls, but the numbers ranged from seven to at least a dozen. Ferguson police claimed that protesters threw rocks and bottles at them when they gathered in front of the police department. However, a report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch describes the protest as "noisy but mostly peaceful." Cops said most of the people booked were arrested for either not following police orders or agitating the crowd. The protests occurred a day after a Ferguson cop was shot and wounded in the arm. While Ferguson police initially said the officer was hurt late Saturday night in the middle of a robbery, cops are now saying no burglary occurred. Instead, they say the suspected gunman ran and spun around to fire on the cop after the officer pursued him. They have also changed the number of suspects from two to one. Read it at KMOV.com THE CAPTAIN 4. Derek Jeter Gets RBI in Final At-Bat Derek Jeter capped off his 20-season career in baseball Sunday with an RBI single. The captain of the New York Yankees finished at Boston's Fenway Park. The hit marked number 3,465, and it sealed his career batting average at .310. Despite the historic rivalry, the Red Sox honored Jeter with a pre-game ceremony that including Aretha Franklin performing her classic "Respect." Jeter led the Yankees to five World Series championships over his two decades with the team. "It is what we've known. He's been the Yankees shortstop," said Joe Girardi, the Yankees manager and former teammate of Jeter. "It is hard to believe it is coming to an end." Read it at ESPN Disaster 5. Al Qaeda: We Got ISIS's Back The leader of al Qaeda's Syria affiliate vowed Sunday that his group would fight back against the United States and its allied nations, and would "use all possible means" to do so. He also warned that the conflict would reach Western countries that join the alliance. Abu Mohammed al-Golani, leader of the affiliate, which is known as the Al-Nusra Front—and viewed by the U.S. as a terrorist group—made the remarks in a 25-minute audio recording. He said the group would defend "the people of Syria" and warned that the airstrikes "will cause the battle to be transported to the hearts of your own homes."
