Cheat Sheet - Who the U.S. Should Really Hit in Syria

Read This, Skip That ....

NOT ENOUGH

On Monday night, the U.S. began a series of airstrikes targeting ISIS forces in Syria, but that isn't enough to dismantle the terrorist organization. ISIS can't be decapitated like al Qaeda was, Daniel Trombly and Yasir Abbas write. Instead, the U.S. and allies need to kill mid-level commanders—and that will take ground forces.

Catastrophe

The World Health Organization has said previously that the number of Ebola cases could "eventually" surpass 20,000, but now the agency is warning that number will be reached by November 2, soaring by the thousands every week unless countries ratchet up efforts to halt the outbreak. WHO officials said in a statement that "without drastic improvements in control measures" the number of new cases and deaths will rise from hundreds to thousands per week. The outbreak in West Africa already has killed 2,800 people from among 5,800 infection cases. "We are seeing exponential growth and we need to act now," said Christopher Dye, a co-author of the WHO study. Dye said the fear is that Ebola "will become more or less a permanent feature of the human population."

UNLIKELY INFLUENCE

ISIS propaganda films are starting to steal from classic Hollywood movies and landmark documentaries. Jamie Dettmer writes that elements of Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers and genre films like Saw and The Evil Dead are evident in ISIS recruitment movies. ISIS's flick Flames of War echoes Leni Riefenstahl's Triumph of the Will, which she made for Hitler. The brutal butchers are getting more stylized in their violence.

INTELLIGENT DESIGN

Firearms with built-in safety features to only discharge for authorized users have long faced opposition from gun-rights advocates who've threatened manufacturers and made sure no store would sell them. But a New Jersey law may force the sale of smart guns, reports Brandy Zadrozny.

IT'S ALL OVER

It's official. The well-documented demise of Kris and Bruce Jenner's marriage is over, as Kris Jenner has officially filed for divorce, and Bruce is expected to file as well. Kris filed pro per, meaning no lawyer, citing "irreconcilable differences." They will reportedly have joint custody of their children, and neither partner will get spousal support. The deal was worked out between the pair's managers after they separated in 2013.
