Cheat Sheet - Whole Foods Feeds Off Anti-GMO Ignorance

Read This, Skip That ....

DUPED
The confusing debate over genetically modified food isn't going away soon. And the longer consumers don't understand what they're buying, the more places like Whole Foods benefit. Michael Schulson writes that health nuts shouldn't always believe labels that use fear to push sales.
TOLERANCE
The Minnesota Vikings announced Monday that Adrian Peterson will "fully participate in this week's practices and meetings" and is expected to play this Sunday. The decision follows the team's one-game deactivation of Peterson last weekend after he turned himself in to face charges of child abuse in Texas. A grand jury indicted Peterson after a medical examiner found injuries to his 4-year-old son's body from a "whooping" with a tree branch, which the All-Pro running back admitted to delivering. No matter for the Vikings owners, though: They said they'll wait for the law to speak. "To be clear, we take very seriously any matter that invovles the welfare of a child," said owners Zygi and Mark Wilf. "At this time, however, we believe this is a matter of due process, and we should allow the legal system to proceed so we can come to the most effective conclusions and then determine the appropriate course of action." As Robert Silverman notes, child abuse counts as domestic abuse, which is being sternly and automatically punished by the league in the case of Ray Rice.
POOR TASTE
On Sunday evening, Urban Outfitters started selling a "vintage" Kent State University sweatshirt—that appeared to be splattered with fake blood. The much-criticized label says the shirt isn't actually blood-stained, but the company won't say who designed it.
BEYOND UKRAINE

A Russian official warned that any alleged discrimination against Russian-speaking minorities in Baltic countries could lead to "far-reaching, unfortunate consequences." Konstantin Dolgov, the human-rights ombudsman of the Russian foreign ministry, alleged in a speech Saturday in Latvia that "entire segments of the Russian world" were being mistreated. Ironically, Russia has a less-than-stellar human-rights record itself. However, Russia has long claimed that Russian-speaking minorities are treated as second-class citizens in Baltic nations. Dolgov's ominous statement, published Monday, has raised fears that Russia will try to stoke tensions in these countries as a pretext to annexation, just as it did in Ukraine.

THE HORROR
Doctor Stephen Seager could lose his job after penning an account of the rampant and unchecked violence he claims to have witnessed and experienced as a psychiatrist at a Silence of the Lambs-style forensic institute. But that won't stop him from publishing a fascinating and terrifying tell-all, he tells Caitlin Dickson.
