Welcome to October! Here's the news of the day:

  1. eBay is finally going to spin out PayPal in 2015.
  2. This chart shows why eBay is going to spin out PayPal. PayPal is a strong, growing business that doesn't need eBay. 
  3. Speaking of PayPal, it was supposed to be a part of Apple Pay, but eBay CEO John Donahoe did a deal with Samsung for the Galaxy S5 which pissed off Apple so it cut PayPal from Apple Pay.
  4. Microsoft announced the next version of Windows, called Windows 10. It looks like it managed to strike a balance between the traditional style of Windows 7, and the more radical elements of Windows 8.
  5. Reddit is raising $50 million, and hopes to share some of the money with Reddit users somehow.
  6. Oracle co-CEO Safra Catz decided to trash SAP paying $7.4 billion for Concur, which does expense software. "I literally went down to my car and thought, oh my God, SAP bought Concur -- maybe tomorrow they'll buy Dairy Queen."
  7. Twitter is going will unveil a new platform for developers called "Twitter Fabric," The Information reports. The new platform will reportedly have "tools for developers to help people sign up for their apps more easily, sell ads on them, uncover technical glitches and view other analytics." Twitter doesn't have the best relationship with developers, so we'll see how this goes.
  8. Tony Hsieh has stepped down as the leader of the project that is trying to turn downtown Las Vegas into a tech town. The project is also laying off 30% of its staff.
  9. Forbes has a big profile of Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, and his investments. There is a particular focus on his investing in Alibaba.
  10. Marc Lore, formerly of Diapers.com, says he wants to raise $600 million in funding for his new e-commerce startup, Jet.com over the next 5 years. He plans to spend $550 million in marketing. He hasn't even launched yet.
