The 'Fingerprint' That Helped Unravel the Amelia Earhart Mystery After decades filled only with heartache in the search for Amelia Earhart, a storm on Gardner Island in 1991 turned up a piece of an airplane. Michael Daly reports on Ric Gillespie and his wife, Pat Thrasher, who found the metal object, matched it with Earhart's plane, and their plans to look for more. Read it at The Daily Beast BIG APPLE 2. Tim Cook: 'I'm Proud to Be Gay' In an essay in Businessweek, Apple's CEO has acknowledged for the first time publicly that he is gay. "While I have never denied my sexuality, I haven't publicly acknowledged it either, until now," Tim Cook writes. "So let me be clear: I'm proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me." He writes that being gay helps him understand what it means to be a minority and made him tougher. Cook also wrote of the need to have workplace-equality bills for gays, as well as other protections. "There are laws on the books in a majority of states that allow employers to fire people based solely on their sexual orientation," he says. "There are many places where landlords can evict tenants for being gay, or where we can be barred from visiting sick partners and sharing in their legacies. Giants Win World Series The crowd noise at Kauffman Stadium was constant and loud Wednesday as Madison Bumgarner pitched five innings of near-perfect relief to propel the San Francisco Giants to a tight 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals in Game 7 and their third World Series in five seasons. With both starters chased early, the game became a contest between bullpens. And no one stood taller than Bumgarner, the 6-foot-5 hurler who added to his postseason legacy with a third victory this Series. The Giants, who also won the championship in 2012 and 2010, ended a Series streak that had seen home teams win the last nine Game 7s. Bumgarner entered the fifth inning with a 3-2 lead, and after giving up a leadoff single to Omar Infante, he shut down Kansas City, as the Giants took the Series four games to three over the Royals.
