UNHOLY ACTS

The Chicago Archdiocese released more than 15,000 pages detailing the lurid sex abuse perpetrated by 36 priests from the 1950s until just last year. Barbie Latza Nadeau reports the documents reveal men of the cloth plying victims with cigarettes and alcohol, molesting and raping them, and one who pillaged an Episcopal church.

OOPS?

Charges against AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd of attempting to procure a murder through a hitman have been dropped in New Zealand. "I was advised by the Crown Solicitor Hollister-Jones that he had reviewed the police file and the available evidence to support the charge of attempting to procure murder," said Paul Mabey, a lawyer for Rudd. "He had formed the view that there was insufficient evidence to justify that charge. He has now withdrawn the charge." Rudd, 60, appeared in court Wednesday after his home was raided by police. Mabey said his client "suffered unnecessary and extremely damaging publicity as a result of widespread and sensational reporting of a very serious allegation, which, on any basis, was never justified." While charges of attempting to procure murder have been dropped, Rudd still faces the remaining charges and could face a maximum of seven years if convicted of threatening to kill.

DON'T GO THERE

The Obama administration has launched a new round of attacks against al Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al Nusra, whose members once fought alongside U.S.-backed rebels. Intelligence officials warned the administration against going after al Qaeda, reports Shane Harris and Jamie Dettmer, because it would split the coalition fighting ISIS.

POOR JUDGMENT

A federal judge offered not one but eight arguments to uphold gay-marriage bans in Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Unfortunately for Judge Jeffrey Sutton, not one of them makes sense, writes Jay Michaelson.

ONE IS ENOUGH

Chinese couples are failing to take advantage of the country's newly loosened one-child policy. An official at China's National Health and Family Planning Commission expected 2 million additional births a year, only 700,000 couples have applied to have a second child. Last year, China allowed couples in which both parents do not have siblings to apply to have a second child. China's one-child policy is one of its most controversial and has often been skirted by well-connected, wealthier citizens. However, economic concerns may have led couples not to apply for a second baby. "Because of concerns over child-bearing and child-raising costs, or other career-related considerations, many young couples are not in a hurry to have children," said Zhao Yanpei.
