Cheat Sheet - ‘Interstellar’ Is Wildly Ambitious, Very Flawed, and Absolutely Worth Seeing

To Infinity, and Beyond

In Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic, there are scenes of unspeakable beauty—calm, arresting shots of outer space and unknown worlds. There are also scenes of clunky, cliched dialogue. Oh, and the brilliant Matthew McConaughey. Marlow Stern reviews Interstellar and finds a movie aiming for Stanley Kubrick-size grandeur.

NOT SAFE

The Supreme Court agreed Friday to review a challenge to the Affordable Care Act involving subsidies. The highest court in the land is taking a Republican-backed appeal that targeted the tax credits included under the national health-care overhaul. The tax credits help about 4 million Americans purchase coverage. A ruling blocking those credits could potentially dismantle Obamacare by rendering other provisions ineffective and destabilizing insurance markets.

STEADY AS SHE GOES

The October jobs report shows unemployment fell to 5.8 percent during the month, the lowest level in six years. However, U.S. payrolls added only 214,000 new jobs, down from the 256,000 added during September. Overall, the economy is continuing to show signs of improvement. Job growth has exceeded 200,000 in each of the previous nine months and fits with the Federal Reserve's optimistic decision last month to end its bond-buying program. Still, wage growth remained sluggish, with average hourly earnings only rising 3 percent in October.

BUNDLE UP

From the Dakotas to Texas, some 200 million people will feel the wrath of a polar vortex as early as next week. The infamous cold front will hit the north-central part of the U.S. and then expand southward and eastward. Not only will it be brutally cold, the weather may linger well past the middle of the month. The hardest-hit areas will be Minneapolis, Chicago, Fargo, and St. Louis. Temperatures could plunge by as much as 40 degrees. Temperatures may not get out of the 30s as far as east as New York.

You Betcha

How many fans are really paying to watch All Sarah All the Time on the Palin channel? Her new Web TV show bosses say it's profitable, though traffic figures are unimpressive. Lloyd Grove goes inside the former vice-presidential candidate's channel, with its surfeit of paeans to Ronald Reagan, a countdown of "days left in the Obama administration," and more.
