Cheat Sheet - Inside the Dems’ Godawful Wipeout

Read This, Skip That ....

November 05, 2014
DISASTER

Democrats crashed harder Tuesday night than they did in the horror show that was 2010. The election showed that working-class and blue-collar whites think the Democratic Party is implacably against them, writes Michael Tomasky. Democrats better accept that if they ever want Congress back. Oh by the way: Obama is toast.

LET'S BE FRIENDS

Facing a Republican-led Senate, President Obama soon may be hosting Mitch McConnell at the White House. There are many potential areas for deal-making, reports Eleanor Clift. Trade, corporate tax reform, and modest Obamacare adjustments could all get worked out. However, it means Obama will have to spend more time with the GOP, or else he can kiss goodbye to the last two years of his agenda.

Reefer Races

Voters in Oregon, Alaska, and Washington, D.C. approved ballot measures that allow the use of marijuana by adults, boosting legalization activists who hope to extend their winning streak across the country. Oregon and Alaska join fellow states Colorado and Washington, where voters approved recreational use of pot two years ago. D.C. is on the same path unless Congress, which has review power, blocks the move. In Florida, a ballot measure that would have permitted the use of medical marijuana failed to reach the 60 percent mark required for constitutional amendments.

FINGERS CROSSED

Just how much the next Congress accomplishes could depend on which Ted Cruz shows up in Washington. In an interview with Tim Mak, Cruz claims he wants to find common ground with the Obama administration. But old roles are hard to shake, and Cruz will have to shed his reputation—and national following—built on confronting the president instead of working with him.

PROGRESS

By winning a special election in North Carolina on Tuesday night, Democrat Alma Adams will become the 100th female member of the current Congress, an all-time record. Adams, a state representative, joins 79 other women in the House and 20 women in the Senate.
