Millions of residents along the US Atlantic seaboard were without power and inundated by floodwaters on Tuesday while super storm Sandy faded as it swept beyond New York towards Canada. The joint death toll stands at 30.

Syrian air force chief killed as Turkey rules out further talks
Syrian state television has announced that the country's top air force chief has been assassinated. This comes as neighboring Turkey ruled out any further dialogue with the Syrian regime.

A German appeals court has ruled against police in a case of racial profiling, saying officers broke anti-discrimination law. Human rights groups have applauded the verdict, saying police must now change their practices.

Merkel to host global financial leaders
German Chancellor Angela Merkel is set to sit down with the heads of the world's top economic institutions to discuss the global economy. The meeting comes one day after the same panel met with the president of France.

South Africa police and miners clash again
South African police have fired rubber bullets and tear gas at around 1,000 protesting miners, after a power sub-station was set on fire. The miners had declined an offer to return to work made last weekend.

Greece reaches deal with creditors on austerity drive
The Greek government and international creditors have said they now agree on the scope of austerity measures that Athens needs to push through. The harsh cuts are a prerequisite for new bailout loans to be granted.
