LOOKING AHEAD

With Hillary Clinton and Tim Geithner bowing out, the guessing game has begun. From State and Treasury to the Pentagon, The Daily Beast’s Eleanor Clift examines the options—including Republicans.

Next Move

Mitt Romney may not have won the election, but that doesn’t mean his job prospects are dim. Shortly after conceding the election, Mitt Romney told staffers that this would be his last political campaign, with sources saying he said “I will not fall off the map.” Sources say the former English major is likely to write another book, although some friends say he will not pursue a now-common route of defeated Republican politicians and become a pundit. But don’t think Romney follow Richard Nixon's path of running again: former John McCain campaign advisers Steve Schmidt said, “The only door that is closed to Mitt Romney for the remainder of his life is being president of the United States.”

Sore Losers

The GOP is predictably casting about for reasons to explain away Mitt Romney’s defeat. From Chris Christie to Hurricane Sandy to a lone Black Panther, The Daily Beast’s Jake Heller finds the culprits Republicans are blaming for their loss.

Exodus

Fleeing the carnage in Syria, roughly 8,0000 refugees have entered Turkey in the last 24 hours, according to a Turkish foreign-ministry official. This huge figure reportedly includes 26 officers who defected from the Syrian military and fled overnight. The recent surge brings the total number of Syrian refugees in Turkey to 120,000. In recent weeks, Syrians have become less supportive of the rebels after a series of poorly planned missions, violence to civilians, suspicion of criminal activity, and the killing of prisoners—all while the rebels have become more connected with jihadists.

Mum’s the Word

Despite confirmed reports that Iranian warplanes fired on a U.S. drone over international waters on Thursday, Iran remained silent about the incident on Friday. The Pentagon has confirmed the warplanes fired on the unarmed Predator drone in international airspace 16 miles east of Iran on November 1, but neither Tehran nor Iran’s state-run media has mentioned it. The drone was not damaged during the attack.

Obama to Staffers: 'This Is Your Victory'

After winning reelection, President Obama thanked a handful of his staffers for their tireless effort during the campaign. 'I'm really proud of all of you,' he said, as David Axelrod—mustache fully in tact—and Jim Messina gleefully looked on.
